The mechanism seems to jam up, or else the motor isn't powerful enough to turn the mechanism. Mine seems to jam on the "big" changes - the 10k and 100k mile rollovers.
I've used some silicone grease on the mechanism this time, but I've not done enough miles to know if it will fail again yet.

How much did you open it up to apply? Last time, I removed the dash & just took the unit out to remove the perspex front & clicked the rollover by hand. Sold that car before the next 10K click so dont know whether was a one off or not! Recall not having much of a giggle removing the speedo, so like to do anything I can to help it not happen again with this one.
The problem seems to be so simple it is unbelievable! The stepper motor attaches to the counter mechanism via a spring coupler. This spring coupler is not loctited and starts to slip under maximum load. I.e 9999 to 0000 etc. The fix is to crimp the coupler or apply some loctite. Another inexcusable fault. Not a job for the DIY novice though!!

My speedo only works intermittently. Driving along with nothing and all of a sudden the needle swings up and starts working as normal.
Is it likely to be something that can be fixed at its next service?

That sounds more like the speed sensor problem to me, The garage should be able to check the gap and condition of it. There are ways of checking it if you have an oscilloscope or more crudely with a multimeter. Is it likely to be something that can be fixed at its next service?
