Pls educate me on emerald aftermarket ecu...
Discussion
Before swapping the whole efi sistem for a carb i'd like to see if i can keep it but work out the problems i've got with it at the moment.
You've adviced me in another thread to check the loom and i will indeed do tomorrow but i believe i have another iussue, my griffith is 12 years old and same age has its efi sistem and ecu...
How to update the whole sistem and meantime upgrade it? i was thinking about the emerald ecu which quite a few of you seem to inconditionally support.
Questions:
where could i get an emerald ecu AND its customized (for the griffith) loom?
What else should i check and change to match the new ecu?
Will it work with the larger black plastic airmeter i've got at the moment?
My exhaust sistem is decatted and i have a connection that send a signal to the ecu, i forgot its name but i remember its purpose was to let the ecu think the lambdas where still in place...will these make any difference?
Thanks for the help and have a peaceful sunday evening...

You can buy the Emerald direct from the manufacturer, their website isYou've adviced me in another thread to check the loom and i will indeed do tomorrow but i believe i have another iussue, my griffith is 12 years old and same age has its efi sistem and ecu...

Emerald don't offer a fitting service. They do have a number of recommended installers and a loom maker who they can also recommend. Some of these installers post on here. Mine was done by V8 Developments. Track Car Solutions also have much experience in Emerald installations. Both of these have high reputations among TVR owners in the UK. If you are bringing the car to the UK to have it fitted then talk to them.
Many people have done DIY instalations.
I presume by airmeter you mean an Air Flow Meter. Emerald don't need an AFM. When the Emerald is fitted you will be able to sell some of the parts that you took off and offset this against the cost of the Emerald.
It isn't necessary to have a Lambda sensor with an Emerald. You don't need to supply a signal to it to simulate a lambda sensor. Having said that, the Emerald is capable of working with a wideband lambda sensor. Emerald can supply this as an optional extra. Many of us who have an Emerald have this option.
You should go to the Emerald website and read about all the options available. Some are desirable, but not essential. Others are needed.
You will need a trigger wheel attached to the flywheel pulley. This will change the balance of the pulley and it is important you get this balanced right. The best way to do this has been the subject of much debate here.

Can i ask the follow pls?
1) If no AFM, i guess the engine would breath better...but how the ecu can understand how much air is going into the engine then? sorry if the question seems stupid but if i dont ask i will never know.
2) Which model of emerl ecu should i buy for my griffith 500?
3) i have triple carbon intakes, could i keep them?
4) wideband lambda sensor, what's that? sorry, again a dumb question i guess.
5) what option would you recommend?
I cannot take the car to UK and i'd fix the new ecu where i am living at the moment (Spain), what kind of technician do i need? a simple mechanic or a specialized electrician?
Who could i buy from a customized loom?
Trigger wheel, another shadowy iussue!
I dont know if i'll be able to manage all this, the more i get into this the more carb territory looks like a sweet paradise.
Sorry for boring you with all these questions and hope i'm not ruining your sunday evening anyway!

You are quite right. The AFM obstructs the air flowing into the engine. You will get more power. The Emerald ECU contains a table that contains information. This is called the map. A number of sensors provide information to the ECU. Typicaly the throttle position and the RPM. The ECU uses these to look up a value in the map table. These tell the ECU how much fuel and ignition advance to use. These values are modified by other factors like temperature.
All of this information is put into the map by someone. Typically this will be a tuner on a rolling road. You get a copy of the computer software. This allows you to ajust the map by plugging your laptop into the ECU.
An AFM can cope with small changes to the tune of an engine. If you change the tune with an Emerald then you may need to change the map as above.
AFAIK Emerald currently only sell one model. References to other models are older models.
Not only can you keep your triple throttle. It will work better than before because it has more air available without the AFM.
A lambda sensor gives information about the gas in the exhaust. This tells you how rich or lean the engine is running. A wideband lambda sensor provides a more useful version of this information.
The Emerald can use this information to learn about your engine and make long term ajustments to suit your engine.
Emerald will recommend a loom maker named Paul Dove. He made my loom and does nice work. Posting email addresses here tends to cause the address to receive loads of spam email. You will need to speak to Emerald and they will give you his details. Otherwise let me know and I will PM you.
As for the trigger wheel, I had my Emerald professionaly fitted by V8 develpments. Therefore I didn't have the trouble of personally sorting this matter out.
This thread discusses the issue. http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...
You will need the ECU, tacho driver, trigger wheel and crank position sensor, loom. I took the opertunity to replace all the sensors on my engine. You dont need to go that far. The wideband lambda if you want.
Some of the stuff I put in was future proofing. You could do it for less than I spent.
You will get some maps supplied, but then need to get it on the rolling road to map it properly.
You will find that the car is more drivable as well as more powerful. The carb might look a simple solution. Once the emerald is sorted then it will be much nicer to drive than the carb conversion
