Have an intermittent clock, clonk, clonk sound from the rear specifically when off the power. When the transmission is driven by the engine it goes away, it can also be heard sometimes when coasting in neutral. All the drive shaft and prop shaft fixings are tight so my thought is wear in one of the drive shaft slide joints or one of the Ujs. Have checked that there is plenty of grease in the slide joints.

Not really fiddled with this bit of the car before so any comments welcome.

Initial thought was to go to one of the breakers and get a complete drive shaft and swap first one side and then the other to see if noise goes away, I am assuming that they are not handed.

Will the complete shaft come out without moving the upright and upsetting the camber setting ?

I swapped the Diff recently and was armed with a set of bushes but didn’t change them because I could see nothing wrong with the originals. I would have thought if the bushes were the problem they would make a noise when under load rather than when the car is coasting, thanks for the thought however.

I had that on my Griff 500 .. the big nut on the crown wheel was loose (under the propshaft) .. so I guess the collapsable washer had .. well collapsed.

Tightened it up and all was well.

Had the same, after lifting the rear for a check the noise is gone since.
That is already 10.000 miles ago.

I know, no real help, but my experience.

Cheers,

Martin

Silly, but worth a try, but a mate of mine with a kit car (NG TC) had a similar clonking noise. Turned out he had only done up one of the wheel nuts, and the rest were wobbling aroung in the wheel as it turned.

Ive had top diff mounts crack in two Griff/Chim chassis's,With what your doing,it may pay to strengthen and go solid aluminum bush.

Which bit cracks, is it the rather thin plate either side with the bush in it ?

Also anybody know what size the Prop shaft flange to crown wheel nut is ?
