12k will get you well into the realms of 500's for that. Keep looking and don't feel pressurised into buying the first one you see. Happy hunting...
Wise words

How are you two doing

Bigger isn't necessarily better pre-cats are the future

Don't get drawn into the willy waving thing. Look at the amount of threads on here about removing catalytic converters and installing cherry bombs. these are nearly all 500 owners who want the sound of the pre-cat because everybody loves the sound of the pre-cat cars.
According to TVR Power the 4.3 is the best engine they made. Its lovely and free revving and very driveable.
Buy the best car you can afford - while saving a bit in the bank for any hidden faults you find after getting it home.
And include a very hard look at the state of the chassis. 'Look' at it with a screwdriver to make sure any dodgy bits aren't hidden by waxoyl.

What an absolute load of Pony
So exactly why DID you remove the cats out of your car then Pasco.
I'll retract that statement if you can convince me it wasn't (in part at least) to make it sound better. ie. more like a pre-cat
Edited:
Actually, you're not exactly a typical 500 owner really, are you Pasco, so you don't count. So get lost

)I know i'll get flamed for this, but heres my take on things:-
As much as i'd still like a pre-cat(itch not scratched),i really do feel that the days of the pre-cat in general being the most sought after are coming to an end.People are now seeking out good original unmolested 500's in prefernece, and they are getting to be a rare find.I still think the 4.3BV or 4.5BV will stay at the top of the tree for ultimate collectability, but most realise that the 500 is a better developed and quicker car.

Tripe.Quicker it may be - but only in the right hands in the right place. My 4.3BV isn't exactly struggling for pace, and is almost certainly let down by its driver

Better developed - really? It has three improvements as far as I know. The heater motor is in a better place so you have better cabin heating, and there is sometimes an extra cold air motor on the drivers side.
Bigger front end calipers and rotors.
That's it. And consider yourself flamed

After my rant previously about hijacking threads its not fair to the OP that this should develop into a precat vs 500 argument. But I still maintain the precats sound best.

I removed my cats for a number of reasons Ian and yes making the car louder did come into the equation but only third on the list...
1. To reduce under bonnet heat soak
2. To promote better gas flow and performance.
3. So it sounds better than the weedy pre cat motors.
I bet after a week you wished you had brought a 500
thinking it must be majic to have all that extra power
So Kiss my Rebel Ass Barreti

O and i also agree with Mikey V

'sRight, i'm orff for a drive in the sun
in a 500
Tinks, there is also the look. If the front end is original then it looks different to the 500.
However, early cars that have been accident damaged were repaired with the later nose. You need to decide which look you prefer.
A great deal is made good, original, unmolested cars. This may be the impression that newcomers have as what to look for. It isn’t necessarily correct. No car ever left the TVR factory as perfect as it could be. Product development was very much done on feedback from the owners.
The owners and specialists have always developed solutions to design and development flaws. Sometimes TVR incorporated DIY modifications into the production design. A car that is original will let you choose which to fit, but an upgraded one will save you the work of doing it yourself.
There are usually several alternative solutions to consider for any problem. Take the lights for example. There are several ways to improve them. The only agreement is that the originals were useless. Choose the way you like.
Provided the work is well done then a modified car is probably better developed than the original. It may also indicate an owner who is involved and willing to spend money perfecting the car. Such a car is likely to be well maintained. However the car will still suffer normal deterioration and should be checked carefully.

One can conclude:
Few precat owners want a 500.
Some 500 owners want a precat.
Most 500 owners want the sound of a precat.
Originality counts for everything in the classic car market. Do you want a classic car? Or to develop and improve the ultimate british sportscar from a promising starting point?
I'm in the former camp, with a toe in the latter.
