Please Please can you help, car is a 1992 4.3 Griffith.

The problem is the switches on the dash will not turn the lights on. All fuses and relays OK. If i use the control stalk to flash the lights they work.

Have you tried bypassing any of the switches? not sure on the 4.x's but on the 500 the main beam wont come on unless the sides have been switched on first so i imagine when that switch is on it feeds the next.Dodgy switch for the main might be the cause?

I just experienced a similar thing with my city lights (just before MOT time). If you wait for a while they come on! It's likely the connectors behind the dashboard that connect the switches to the rest of the cable loom. I also have an issue with my right indicator lights that sometimes stays on after the alarm is switched of (Moving these connectors, they go off again). I have a long time experience with Alfa/Italian electrics which are quite similar. All that is needed is a good clean up of all connectors (and especially earths!)

Cheers,

Peter

The earth on the rad can cause flickering lights etc along with ones under the center console.
When i first took my dash out there was a loose wire that looked like it had come of a nearby switch so i put it on....caused the indicators to stay on permatly banghead must have been a spare for something else...theres a couple more like that so make sure you havent accidently put these somewhere too.

Help

When i check fuse number 1 for the dipped beam i do not get a live. Now that the dashboard is pulled out and switch on the lights the light switch seems to be working the lights and also livens fuse 1. I thought the fuse should always have a live feed and the low voltage light switch energised the relay. So whats going on?

It depends what fuse 1 is protecting. If it's the initial circuit (possibly including the dashboard light) it makes sense that it's only live once you switch the lights on. This live should than power the dip lights relay. If the dips don't come on there is something wrong with the relay or the power to it. It could also be a bad earth that prevents drawing the needed dip light current. Or another fuse (plus connecting wires) that is protecting the dipped beam circuit. Perhaps you can measure the resistance between these points to track down the problem.
Good luck, Peter
