Starter motor needed - what type, best price etc
Discussion
For the 500, although I think they're all the same (V8S, Chump, Griff).
What is the one to get - done a quick search and range from £95 to well over £200 for what essentially looks like the same item.
Assume I need the high powered (1.7kW) version?
Where is the best place to get one, not exchange as I'll keep the old as a spare (if its OK).

I've had three different ones on this year. First a new Prestolite, which I'm led to believe is good. Failed within a week, not to say Prestolites are not good, maybe mine was a duffer? Replaced with a refurbished Bosch/Land Rover original item. Failed within a week, possible a faulty refurb? Now got a secondhand Bosch/Land Rover OE unit, works a treat.
Prices vary wildly and most are not exchange items anyway. There used to be some on eBay for about £59; I read a few posts on here to say some had fitted them and were happy.

I went with the company selling on Ebay - Universal. £103 delivered. Brand fire new built in Europe. 1.7KV gear reduction. Sat it next to the Bosch refureb on the bench. The refurb looked a little crude in comparison. Went with the Universal. Crack the Griff up now and it goes zeeeeezeeeeezeeeeee vroom! Before it use to go rararararararar vroom.

I recently replaced my starter motor with a Hi Torque option from Racing Green £225 ex VAT. The refurb unit failed quickly.
Since fitting I have encountered the dreaded hot start problem so ModWide kit also fitted.
I believe all gear reduction starter motors are high torque. Some use 'high torque' as a means to ask more money, when they're all high torque anyway! Since fitting I have encountered the dreaded hot start problem so ModWide kit also fitted.
Fitted the hot start kit, took about 90 minutes as I had to find tools to help and some unforeseen things.
First, testing with LED tester - no earth found on teh Rists block! The LED bulb didn't work so had to find my electrical tester - logically in Andreas boot with her back of goodies - fuses, relays, compressor, locking wheel nuts, tyreweld - obvious really.
Found the earth on the Rists block - easy.
2nd stage - cutting one of the loops - again no major issue. Tested it 5 times before I was certain just to make sure as i've balls things up like this before in trying to rush.
3rd stage - would have put the live loop on the battery terminal but the loop was too small. Found the fuse holder which is right behind the battery and with little spare cable to move it forward. The box was taped which didn't help. Anyway after much fiddling, got one of the small studs out, put the loop on and tried to get the stud back in - aching arms or what! Finally got it in, reconnected the live onto battery, reconnected the earth, tidied it all up and it wouldn't start. Was pretty peeved at this point so went back to read all instructions again and just needed to swap the wires over connected to the loop, and it started. Thank christ.
Why is nothing ever as simple as it looks?

I'm no expert but it says :
"Starter Motor High Torque
Can give in excess of 200% more cranking power
Uses up to 40% less current than original unit
Starts engine regardless of compression or temperature
Straightforward replacement for the original unit"
Decide for yourself."Starter Motor High Torque
