Fan relay blues
Discussion
Fellow Griff owners!
Please help. I’m having problems getting my radiator fans to switch on when they should (1994 Griffith 500). The thermostat and Otter switch are both fine. I have sources the problem back to the fan relay switch which is stuck in the fuse board and won’t come out. It doesn’t want to budge at all. I suspect that the relay terminals have either melted or corroded onto the fuse board. Is there an easy method to remove the relay? WD40 or something? Or will it come down to removing the fuse board? If so how do I remmove the board? Many thanks.

Try WD40 first, but if not then the fuse board is held in place by one bolt at the middle of the bottom edge. You will need to remove battery box to get to it.
Awkward, but not difficult to achieve in 30mins or so.
Thanks Johno, I'll give it a try tonight. It's the first time i'm going to try working on the Griffith myself so wish me luck. (fingers crossed the WD40 does the trick).Awkward, but not difficult to achieve in 30mins or so.
Azhar, had identical problem with the intermittent wipe relay, just carefully insert tip of a screwdriver under each edge and lever gently, also you get more grip if you wear a rubber glove. When mine came out there were no signs of heat damage to terminals, it was just a very tight fit.

Thanks Ian,I'll give it a bash tonight and let you guys know how i get on. Its torture having to keep the Griff in the garage because of it over-heating when it should be out on the road on sunny days like these (You dont get many in Glasgow).

Be careful not to short the teminals. I used a screw driver to get my fuel relay out and it never worked again after that. Not sure what happened but I think some terminals were live and I may have damaged the built in diode by shorting it. Best to disconnect the battery first to be safe.Edited by m4rk on Wednesday 23 July 18:58
Gents.
Oops too late. I think may have shorted the relay as the fans came on a couple times as I was prying it out. Regardless the relay's top terminal was covered in melted black plastic and the slot in the fuseboard where that particular terminal went in had suffered heat damage. Will the radiator fan still work if I just replace the relay or will I now have to replace the whole fuseboard junction box? If so, any ideas where I can get one at a reasonable price? Racing Green's TVR shop sell one for £111.

Thanks, I’ll consult the Bible and have a look around. My car is an early 1994 Griffith 500. Any idea which models to look out for?
The guy who really knew this stuff was Spend. He doesn't post here anymore, but there should still be a link to his website in his profile. It was on there IIRC.I think it was a cavalier and the VW might have been a van. Don't hold me to this as I'm not certain.
