The problem began a few weeks ago and has continued once in every 5 or 6 starts. Ignition lights come on as normal then on the further turn of the key - nothing! Ignition lights do not dim - no click. Nothing. Then maybe it will go on the next attempt, maybe it won't go for 10 mins and lots of tries. On the last occassion I was on the phone to the AA when I just tried it after 10 mins of nothing and away she went.
Where do I start looking? Is it the starter motor or a connection between the ignition and the motor?
Any clues?

Stick a multimeter on the wires exiting the ignition barrel. Sounds like the internal contacts aren't making.

Sounds like it might be a sticky starter solenoid. The starter solenoid is switched directly by the ignition switch - no relay! This means the ignition switch is switching quite a large current and can burn out. A new switch (you don't need the key barrel) is only £3 or £4 off ebay and although a bit of a head-scratcher is easy enough to fit. But if that's the case, then you need a starter solenoid relay (otherwise known as a 'hot start kit') as well. Again easy enough if you're not unhappy with car electrics.

Hi,
had exactly the same symptoms on my S2. Tapping the starter motor with a jack handle would cure the problem when ever it decided not to start. Changed out the starter motor and problem cured permanently.
