Overheat buzzer
Discussion
I was thinking about fitting an engine overheat warning buzzer. It occurred to me that I might be able to use my Emerald ECU to control this, so I phoned Emerald.
This is possible. I used a 12V buzzer that was originally sold for motorbikes. It was originally to add an audible turn warning to a bikes turn indicator.
The positive is connected to any live feed. The negative is connected to a pin in the plug that connects to the Emerald ECU. Which pin you connect to is variable. You need to find one that hasn’t been used for other purposes.
Then configure the ECU software to earth that pin when the engine temperature exceeds a value of your choice. To test the system just reduce the value and cause the buzzer to sound. Alternatively, fit a test button to earth the buzzer.
Obviously the buzzer is taking its reading from the ECU temperature sensor.
My buzzer is fitted. In a few days time V8D will have finished my new engine and I am due back at Emerald for mapping. They will find a suitable spare pin, connect the earth wire and configure the software.
In view of the vague readings of the standard temperature gauge, this is IMHO, a simple, cheap must-do modification.
As soon as Emerald have configured mine I will update this. with exact details of how Dave did mine.
In principle it's as simple as configuring an unused output pin and a user output in the software.
