...of car. Manual, non-PAS 500 model....

Noticed this morn; appears to be coming from below steering rack on drivers side. Unable to attend to it now but has anyone had same problem? And is it safe to drive until I can sort? Could it be something else, sorry to be a bit vague but cant attend to it and struggling to see where this oil is coming from (thin consistency).

Never had a problem here previously.

Dave.

Preserp?
Mine is doing the same at the moment, looks like the PRV nut is leaking on mine, but they can leak from pretty much anywhere around the oil pump.

yup, preserp!

You been driving yours whist its been leaking. Checked oil, seems fine (never seems to lose much if any)! Just checked under bonnet for tightness of a few visible nuts and oil filter-all ok.
Excuse my ignorance but......PRV nut-wots this then? Youll tell me and I`ll know.....

You still doing ya chassis?

Dave.

I would want to know what it was (engine? steering? brakes?) and be certain that it wasn't leading to a catastrophic failure before I drove it.

It might just be a weeping seal on the front cover in which case no big deal as long as it's nowhere near the exhaust. On the other hand you *might* be about to lose steering/brakes or dump all the engine oil onto the exhaust, seize the engine and then set the car on fire. Not saying it's likely but you can't tell until you have found the problem, and some of the potential causes can lead to very nasty results.

yikesyikesyikes.....Dont hold back eh?

Well, not coming from exhaust side and car was serviced 500 or so miles ago. Hasnt had great deal of use in last 6 weeks.....crap northern weather and work commitments etc.
Oh and the amount is about a tablespoon or less....if this helps.

As Pete says you need to be sure it is engine oil before you ignore it and drive the car.
Assuming you dont have power steering ,and you are sure it is not brake fluid then you should be ok if its just a drip.
The PRV is the pressure relief valve on the side of the oil pump.
It has a copper washer on it, dont take it out unless you know what you are doing, lots of oil will surely flow !
But as I say, it could be the oil pump mating surface leaking, and again as Pete says , the timing cover may be leaking.

Maybe try cleaning it off and see where it comes from?

My chassis is all done thanks, cars been on the road since about early July woohoowoohoo

I would suggest checking around the oil pressure switch which from the top is annoyingly hidden, it is also fairly difficult to see from underneath. Mine started leaking round the body of the switch itself. Easy to change once you have removed the bits that in the way.

Righto, discovered problem.......glad I took your advice, now its running out rather fast.....engine oil, that is!

Had another look through wheel arch and spotted the oil filter dripping, not so obvious (I looked before) until i noticed what has happened to the top of the filter; bubbled up where the steel coolant pipe (recently fitted) has rubbed against it, the oil trickling from the top of the filter. A pain in the proverbial but not a disaster!

Can anyone suggest a smaller filter.......think its a fram thats on it!!

Thanks again.

Dave.

If you can't move the coolant pipe away from the filter, consider putting a slice of hose over the outside of the coolant pipe to prevent direct metal-to-metal contact.

Once the filter is off you will find the oil pump drains and will need to reprime itself next time you start the engine. How easily it does this depends on how worn it is and how long it has had to drain. To give yourself the best chance, get everything ready and warmed up, then do the oil/filter change and get it running again without any delay. I don't mean rush round with a stopwatch, but don't take the filter off and then go make yourself a cuppa.
