Changing wheels.
Discussion
I’m trying to work out sizes before buying bigger wheels and tyres.
There has been a thread in the chimp forum that gave some useful stuff, but didn’t answer all the questions.
The default tyre choice seems to be Toyo with standard size wheels. In the larger sizes are any of the other tyre manufacturers offering anything better, or should I just get bigger Toyo’s? It’s for road use and needs to be good in all weathers.
Has anyone fitted the SP12 wheels? Did they affect the Speedo? Silverstone say not, but the numbers suggest a 4% difference.
So what have others fitted and found to work well without spacers or re-calibrating the Speedo?

Definitely the best combo, IMHO, and this was superb on my last Griff. I had 18x9 ET40 rears and 17x8 ET25 fronts. The rears allowed me to fit 265 tyres, and the fronts will let you fit up to 235's with ease. If you don’t have PAS, then you might want to fit 17x7 on the front and fit either 205 or 215 tyres.
Mike, did this affect the Speedo, the numbers suggest a 6% difference. In the bible it says that going too big can reduce grip in poor weather. Did you find any problems in bad weather? So what have others fitted and found to work well without spacers or re-calibrating the Speedo?
The 18/17 combo worked really well,i felt, and it didn't affect the speedo in a negative way,as mine over read anyway,so the largr diameter just helped make it slightly more accurate
.As for poor weather driving,i always drive like a 'pussy' in the wet,and always have done with these cars,so as long as your sensible i dont see an issue to be honest.I had Bridgestone acemetrics on mine,Goodyear acemetrics would also be a good choice in these sizes.Depending on what size tyres you want to fit you will need to check the rim widths and ET of the wheels you fancy. At the time i bought mine,SP didn't do a rim big enough for the 265 rears i wanted to run(9"),and they also needed an ET40 offset which they couldnt do.I would advise choosing your tyre sizes then seeing which wheels will be able to provide you the necesary ET and rim width required.
I would imagine Darren(Ray Von)is still running this set up on my old car,so it might be worth asking him how he gets on with it.I know he liked it when he first bought the car
I'm really looking forward to fitting the same combo on the AJP,as it transforms the car so much, for the better.

I had the 17F and 18R SP12's put onto my Griff earlier this year, using the Toyo boots. The team at Silverstone are great - they did a full alignment and modifications to the suspension set up as part of the work. Since the change to the new wheels, I'd say that there has been a major improvement in the overall handling of the car and, in particular, the low speed manoevering is much easier (no power steering!). I've not really seen any change in speedo readings; tend to use the rev counter anyhow.
Bloody hell you two, insomniacs or what?
Fester, I've had no problems with this set up all through our glorious summer
. I do, however, also drive like a pussy in really bad weather, probably more so than Mike (although I've never felt the need to affix sunflowers
)
I was a bit concerned when buying the car after reading stuff on here about tramlining etc but after talking it through with Mike and contacting Julian at TCS, I decided it would be the right thing to do.
My old Chim500 had a similar set up with Nitrons, polybushes etc but with estorils and is just not in the same league in any conditions.
Disclaimer: I know absolutely sweet F.A. about setting up cars, suspension or anything come to that. It's just what I've found.
Also don't get Compomotives, we don't want them becoming common now do we

You said that 235/40R17 will fit with ease. Are you saying that’s what you did fit, or just what the maximum that will fit is? Did you have to fit lock stops? I don’t want lock stops or spacers.
I don’t generally take the Griff out in the rain if I can avoid it. It’s only if I get caught out, or have gone away in the car.
I will get the sat nav out and check the Speedo. If I understand correctly then providing it’s over reading now by 6% or more it will be more accurate, but still over read. My worry is that I will make it under read. In my area are plenty of average speed cameras and the government promises more. I need to be able to trust the Speedo to keep me safe from the vultures.
Subject to Speedo checks, the current front runner is the Rimstock Team Dynamics Pro Race 1.2 in silver.
Fronts 17X8 ET25 fitted with 235/40 R17 Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric
Rear 18X9 ET40 fitted with 265/35 R18 Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric
Does anyone have these tyres fitted, or better still, this combination fitted and have any thoughts?
Can anyone think of any reason why the above will cause problems, or how it can be bettered?
TIA

I never had the 235's on the front,i had 215's fitted to mine as i had initially intended to put them on L110,which doesnt have pas.If you have pas then i would fit 235's,i know 'stilly' has this size on his,and is really pleased with them.I never needed lock stops or spacers, thanks to them being the correct offset.ET25 is spot on for the front offset, and you will need ET40 with the rear 9" rims to prevent rubbing the wheelarch if you want to fit 265's.You said that 235/40R17 will fit with ease. Fronts 17X8 ET25, rear 18X9 ET40. Spoke to James at Compomotive and he knew what sizes worked on a Griff
I have them in the sizes 16/17 (i painted them, hope they have black from the manufacturer now) and i wanted to go an inch bigger in diameter and width...

The only doubt i have with bigger wheels is that my griffith has been lowered by a good bit and bigge wheels could rubb the inner and eventually outer fender? A bigger et number means that the wheel will stay further in into the fender well?
Mine was running quite low at the front at first, only about 115-120mm IIRC from the front wishbone. They didn't foul anything running like that.
They can do black now from the factory, I seem to recall someone had the MO6 in anthracite which looked very nice
Could work well on the MO5.
