Speedo & Brake prob's
Discussion
Hi
'92 400. my speedo is stationary at 25mph when cruising or if I go a bit faster it goes to 80 mph and I know I'm not doing 80 mph, I find myself going by speed cameras at a snails pace.
Also, My brakes work fine, but when ever I press the brake pedal I get an almighty klunk, I'm finding this a bit scary.
I'm a little worried about gaining a few points and trying to use the handbrake to stop.
Cheers Stu.

Had a similar problem recently with my '98 Griff 500 - speedo would not go above 80 mph no matter the gear / revs. Ended up swapping for a refurbished speedo which has solved the problem - seems that it's not uncommon that the cogs (?) inside the speedo unit jam/slip. BTW, I check with the MOT people re the fact that the mileage now on the dash is not consistent with the MOT records / log book - they weren't concerned! I have kept a record of the mileage on the original unit I removed and the mileage on the new unit that went in - so that the actual mileage on the car can be calculated at a later date.
In the mean time, until you can find a replacement unit, try to work on driving by the RPM - the ratios on speed / rpm are pretty simple -though I can't recall the ratios as I type this...
Have fun learning while
