Help!!

The veneer on my dash was so badly damaged I decided to go for a Leven one, my problem is that the brackets that need to be glued onto the back of the dash to hold the switches etc are not holding.

What glue/bonding/contact adhesive have other people used to do this?

I have used araldite in the past to glue the items back to the rear of dashes.

I used BONDlOC B2013 Steel Epoxy, from Maplins. Its been in place for over a year and so far so good!

A word of warning, be careful on the alignment of the boot release button. I had it aligned properly on the bench, but in flexing the dash to get it back in the button was just catching the side of the hole. As a result the first time I opened the boot after driving the car to fill up, the button stayed on and burnt out the boot actuator. Thankfully it was in the open position

Good news for me Antony. Bad news for anyone hoping to follow my lead.
Was expecting to see you up there but Ian told me you had other stuff going on.

That reminds me I'd better post an update on the Chassis thread Not sure I dare now!

I tried araldite rapid but found it too brittle, would that be that different to the standard araldite?

Otherwise I will try the stuff from maplin.

Cheers

Try scoring the hell out of the back of the dash where you're gluing to. I reglued the light cluster of switches 18months ago with Araldite rapid and its still strong (fingers crossed it doesn't pop off next time)

Usual disclaimers about being carefull of fingers, damage, etc apply biggrin

If you use Araldite be sure to use Araldite Precision not Araldite Rapid, the latter will not hold it for long. I also had a problem with the boot release button sticking and burning out the release motor so incorporated a time simple delay unit so that however much the button sticks the motor only receives a single pulse. The method of fixing the button/indicator unit is not one of TVR's finer moments as the whole unit can flex when a button is pressed. I have now added a small bracket between the fog lamp switch and the first indicator lamp to give it more support.

As Baretti mentions you need to roughen up both the dash and fixings with a course emery cloth to give a chance for the epoxy to grip

Thanks for the responses, I will try again with Araldite Precision and hopefully have better luck!!!

Then hopefully find that it is just a blown fuse as to why the lights now don't work!!!

I read all the warnings about dash replacement but did not ask enough questions before starting.

Glue it Friday and hopefully fit it back Saturday, then weather permitting give it a run out to clear the cobwebs!!!

Cheers

Trevor

Trevor,

Aradite Precision does take a much longer time to cure at normal room temps than rapid I normally leave mine 3 days at this time of the year so if you intend refitting next day I would use a hairdryer or something to quicken things up. Your lack of lights could be a fuse but a connector may have pulled off the light switches, easily done with the dash out.
Best of luck

Paul

Thanks everyone, I went with Araldite Precision and kept the dash indoors overnight with the heating left on!!!
What I do know now is the Araldite Rapid I was sold is either ancient stock or counterfeit, as the packaging is nothing like the blister packs sold in B&Q.

The lights was a blown fuse so nice and easy that one.

Just need to sort out the active/powered aerial as that does not appear to be working.

Cheers

Trevor
