I'll have my new 17x7.5 F and 18x9.0 R pro.race wheels next week, i'll fix 215/40/17 front and 255/35/18 rear...I've seen the new Avon ZZ3 high performance tires, do you think they're a good choice for my griffith?

I really wanted the Toyo Proxes R888 but they do not have fronts with 215/40/17 (only 205...).

ZZ3s are really totally different beasts from the R888s - it's definitely a road tyre. I'm not aware of a 'new' version but reports of previous/current versions are indicating an average/reasonable high performance tyre rather than an outstanding one.

I had ZZ3s on the back of my NSX when I bought it. Previous owner had spent ages trying to work out the best tyres. Car was beautifully balanced with BF Goodrichs on front. Have just changed rears, ZZ3 again.

Nearly pooed myself on the motorway after leaving the tyre centre: R8 goes past at hyperspeed twelve to the frogstar, then caught a queue of traffic, I put my foot down to have a look and got an enormous speed wobble reminiscent of an early 80's skateboard with loose trucks eek Turns out the guys had given me 36psi in one rear and 31psi in the other. Cheers!

After adjusting the pressures it's better but still a bit squirrelly. Has anyone else had this problem?

Editted to add: £89 each inc VAT and fitting not to be sniffed at for 225/50/16

Well, it says ''new'' on Avon web at the ZZ3 page...

http://www.avon-tyres.co.uk/index.php?page=tyres&a...

I could find the Toyo's R888 in the sizes 205/40/17 front (with 7.5x17 wheels) and 255/35/18 rear (with 9x18 wheels), what do you think?

I want the best performance, despite the price and despite the warming out the tires iussue...(I'm used to warm tires as i have DOT Hoosiers on my other toy...)

R888 great for the track and a sunny summer evening blast, not so good to rely on to bring you home in one piece after a downpour. wink

ZZ3s are disappointingly good. Had them on the Chimaera after they stopped the ZZ1s. Much prefer the ZZ1s... wink

Anyone tried both the Avon ZZ3 and the Toyo TR1?

How do they compare?

I was using 1 more than the standard pressure recommended by TVR because I did a fair few trackdays.

Thanks for the inputs, i think i'll go with the Toyo R888.

Last one, do you think the 205/40/17 front (only available size in Toyo R888) is a too small thread or will it work fine?

Well you could consider R888's in

215/45R17
225/45R17
235/40R17

The 235/40R17 should really be on an 8" rim but you would get it on. Whether you should is another matter.

All three will increase the diameter and may rub or require limiting steering lock.

If you still intend to modify the wheelarch then you might consider them.

The 205 was a size fitted by TVR as original equipment for cars without power steering.

I have 205/50 proxies on the front of mine, despite my car having PAS. The car came with them fitted. The PAS cars came with 215/50.

They work fine.

Yes, but i guess the only size that would match the 255/35/18 at rear is the 205/40/17...the 235/40/17 will surely rubb and the first two have too big circumferences.

The car is also lowered by about an inch and room is scarce in the wells...

Any of you have tried the Bridgeston Potenza? Which ones? RE050A or S-03PP?

I think both these tires have the sizes i need: 215/40/17 front and 255/40/18 rear (or 255/35/18...).

You really need a tyre that flexes , ZZ3's don't , proxes do !
