Hi

I'm investing in having the gearbox re-built in my '92 4.3 Griff

As it's the LT177 gearbox (Rover) could anyone offer recommendations on the best gearbox oil to use. I think the original spec was EP80.... would be interested to hear views on any alternates.

Thanks all

Not EP80, it wont change gear when its cold if you do. Land Rover did recommend ATF fluid, but its bad news for bearing life. A lighter 75 full synthetic is not too bad, as long as you go easy on the gears when cold. Otherwise there is a full synthetic especially for these ' boxes here:

I use the Difflock Oil and it seems fine.

Thanks all for the advice and the link to a previous thread.

The Castrol SMX - Synthetic sounds like an interesting choice and I'll be looking into this a little further to find out more.

Bye for now

Definately an improvement especially in selecting 2nd and 4th gears. Also much better when the gear box is hot, changes are smoother and feel less metallic.

Thanks for that. I've neard good things about the castrol SMT oil aswell - isn't it quite pricey though?

I haven't yet found a cheap and good synthetic gear oil!

Actually looking again around the web it's not that expensive in that grand scheme of things - I had it in my head it was much more than that.

SMX about £11 a litre
Difflock Evolution £15.35 a litre

Got to be the cheapest gearbox upgrade around!

I am also thinking about switching to Difflock oil for my 4.3/LT77. I am using Valvoline 75W-80 semi-synthetic at the moment. Strange was that we could only manage to get around 1,6 instead of the 2,7 liter mentioned on the Griffith Pages and the Difflock site in. What are your experiences? Does a Landrover box uses more because it's 4WD?

Thanks,

Peter

Yes, its got a house sized extension on the back and blinkin great transfer box to the offset propshafts (separate but commonly included in the fluid amount required).
