I'm thinking of getting my standard rear section of the exhaust modified to give a little more on the volume side, but I was wondering is there a mod on the silencer that can give any improvement in performance.
e.g straight through pipes or something elce

Short answer, no.

If you were after performance improvements you would need to be looking at the design of the manifold, in conjunction with the cam and intake. By the time you've got as far as the silencer all you're affecting is the noise.

what Peter says is true but I think you`d still get some increase in performance, when I last had my griff on the dyno at Track car solutions when doing some more manifold testing we found the figures were down on my last visit, after a bit of head scratching Joo pointed out that I had left my tail silencers in, whereas before they were removed, and suprisingly this gave an extra 9bhp on the dyno,I must admit we didn`t expect this to have any affect on the performance at all being so far from the engine.

Are you sure that 9bhp was just down to the exhaust?

Get Offords 'Cherry bomb' conversion for £160 they will remove the silencing in the main box, replace it with a 'cherry bomb' and weld it up again. I did not have my car on the dyno before and after the job was done but it sure as hell sounds faster! Also noise settles down nicely at 70/80 mph so not too intrusive while cruising, but the noise is too die for!!
