Hi, bear with me this takes some explaining.

When starting the car sometimes the dashboard green indicator/alarm led stays on, also the fuel pump doesn't fully prime and when you select reverse gear it dies.

If I select 1st gear and move off it clears itself in a matter of yards, but not in reverse.

Ive never had a problem when its cold, its usually when I have been for a run and then try to start it. It fires no problem but does run a bit lumpy until it clears.

Strange one I know, any ideas welcome.

Hi Carl,

I've not had this happen, so I have no concrete answer, just a coulple of guess I'm sorry..

I'd guess as earthing problem. When a big earth isn't working the electrical power till try its bets to get to earth via other routes and therefore interfere with other electrical circuits in your car. Alarm, indicators, fuel relays. This may explay why multiple parts of your electrical system are playing up.

Why does the gear selection has an impact? A very shaky guess is the physical action of you changing gears is adding or removing some pressure to the earth points at the front of the transmission tunnel. Maybe via the gearbox or via moving the centre console cover which sits against the earthing points.

The electrical systems in plastic cars without decent earths can be real nightmares, the strangest things can happen.

I'd go for an earth problem too.

When you go into reverse it's turning on the reversing light, might be worth starting with the reverse light circuit and check the earth for that.

Next time you think it will die when you select reverse, get someone to stand behind your car as you very slowly put it in reverse. If it dies the moment the reverse lights come on, you know its to do with the reverse light circuit.

Or remove the reverse light bulbs so this circuit is partially removed - as a test of course.
