Gear Stick Noise?
Discussion
Had my Griffith serviced about a month ago, and ever since, the gear stick has rattled between a particular rev range under acceleration. It doesn't appear that anything is about to fall off, but I just wondered if anyone else has experienced the same thing? It was only a minor service, so it was pretty much a fluid check and oil change etc, and I wouldn't have thought there would be a need to fiddle with the gear stick?
Are there any linkages that may have worked loose that I could check? I just don't want to be embarrassed if I pull away from the traffic lights, and am left holding my gear stick (so to speak...)
Dan.

It could be the remote gear linkage. The gear lever doesnt go directly into the box but has a remote shaft with lots of nuts and washers that can work loose. Sit in the car with the ignition off and the door open. Give the gear leaver a wiggle from side to side in neutral and slide it in and out of some gears. Listen for metalic tinkling noises coming from underneath car.
Slacken off handbrake cable (chock wheels first!) so that it can be raised almost verticaly. Remove heater console. Undo nuts behind seat that hold the transmisson cover on. Remove cover. There will be an inspection hatch around the gear lever. This is rivited origionally but on mine it was screwed down as someone had removed it in the past. The remote linkage was loose on mine and needed tightening.
PS mines a 4 litre with Rover gear box but I think it is the same on a 4.3 even if it has the Borg Warner box. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Jamie - on mine it is both rivetted and screwed (!!) but when I took them all out the fibreglass seems to have bonded together - lots of ominous cracking sounds when I tried to lever it off, so I gave up. Did yours do this?
Anyone know if this panel HAS to come off to get the gearbox out as I'm going to change the clutch soon?
Cheers, Tony

Well, mine was just screwed down with a bit of glue added for good measure, it came off easy enough. Wonder why yours is riveted as well? Someone just making sure its all secure I expect.
Without referring to the bible I cant remember if the panel has to be removed when removing the gear box. I expect so in order to remove the gear lever itself.
