Reversing Light problem

Reversing lights are not coming on when reverse is selected. Bulbs/fuse etc seem OK. Before I start meddling, does anyone have any idea where the sensor/switch is? Would it be somewhere on the remote gear linkage or gear box? Any info appreciated.

It's a switch on the outside of the gearbox, so the problem could be that the wires have corroded. You need to be able to get under the car to see it. I thinbk it's on the O/S.
