Love my Griff to bits but the gearbox has always been a fight and needs a firm shove. Like most lived with it.

Just taken out a Morgan Aero 8 out for a test drive for a weekend and it was superb. The main thing is the 6 speed box which was light and smooth, ditto the clutch. The only snag was the £60k price tag (Lambo and Aston territory)so I declined to purchase it!

My thoughts are has anyone fixed the ball ache of a Griff gearbox or fitted a better one.I have heard the later Tuscan etc are good.

I've recently bought a 98 Griff. The gearbox was stiff and also had mesh problems with 5th gear. Fernhurst sent it away to be re-conditioned under warranty and it's now lovely and smooth.

So, they can be Ok. May be I'm one of the lucky minority ???

Tuscans also use the T5 box that the most serpentine 500s have fitted.

Replacing the gearbox oil should help the gear change.

I've just been reading a few reviews of Griffs and Chims from the 90s - it was often said that they had a "firm, man's gearbox" which takes some effort. Having said that, mine's an earlier LT77 which not too bad except third gets a bit sticky when hot and I have to take my time into fifth. It's being replaced with a refurbished 'box in January along with the diff'. Happy days.

Most of the time the Sticky when Hot problem is cured by changing the oil yes

Could also be the syncros, when I purchased mine when the box got hot it would stick in 3rd or 4th and had to be gently hit to get out of those gears, box was stripped and new syncro fitted and now is fine.

Thanks

Looks like I should change the oil. Any idea what sort of oil and if I remember right it is a side fill and side empty arrangement?

Don't forget the remote linkage which can play up. Unlike the Cerbera, the Griff gear stick doesn't go directly into the box and the remote mechanism can cause all sorts of feel problems especially if worn or broken.

My gears became stiff to change when warm. On advice from here, I changed the oil, which made little difference. As SH pointed out it may be the linkage. A bit of lubrication made all the difference with mine. Unfortunately it's not easy to get to from underneath. I managed to access mine from above by carefuly cutting the rubber gaitor around the screws which are fixed from underneath, then removing the rubber gaitor, then with the help of a mirror and a small torch, sprayed grease on the pivot points of the linkage with the help of a long nozzle. My gaitor is now fixed from above using self tappers and washers. I now make this part of my yearly maintenance. CRAIG

The T5 box on my Chim has always been stiff to operate.

I plan to change the oil for some Evolution 1. It's supposed to be better for the box than ATF and helps make the gear change smoother.
The supplier is:

It's not cheap but its worth a try before more drastic measures

Usually the answer...also usage helps.

any car (g-box) will stiffen up if used infrequently. particularly in cold weather. And a griff is a low mileage car year on year.

My car is stiffer at the start of the season, but after a few 100 miles, it loosens up fine. After the first European trip if the year...its slick as f...

Linkage is the most likely cause tho.

Got some pics that should help. Is a Chim though. Cant see there would be any difference...

Take off centre console. Drill out rivets on Gear linkage cover.

Is that the T5 in the pictures? I was under the impression that with the T5 it was straight into the box and it was the Rover box that had the linkage.

T5 yes
Incidentally if you removed those 2 bolts would the linkage come off completely?
The reason i ask is because my gear knob is solideek(sorry) and i can't remove it.
