wing mirror glass (and fao shpub)

Obviously over-excited things on my last trip out, and the driver's wing-mirror glass has fallen off.

It dangled nicely by the heated filament wires so I could rescue it before it hit the dirt, but now I have to get it back on.

Double-sided sticky tape doesn't really seem like the best idea, even foam-backed. Would anyone have any better ideas? Or failing that tell me where I can buy the tape?

probably a dumb question, but has it become detached from the plastic ring wotsit that locks it into the other ... uhm .. plastic ring wotsit?

Thanks. Nah, the flat sheet of glass has detached from the mechanism. I'm left with a flat piece of glass - with a stuck on filament and two connectors - and all the mechanism left as it was in the mirror housing.

The glass is just stuck onto the mechanism with foam-backed double-sided sticky tape, which seems insane. My sticky tape is no longer sticky, so I can't easily re-attach it.

I would have thought the foam tape used for sticking the back No. plate on would be fine. I've used this to good effect. It stays sticky when wet, as they say.

Foam d/s sticky tape is the only thing - unless you want to drill the grlass and screw it on! You can buy it in stationers - blanket/excrement etc. Just make sure the surfaces are clean and you press it down firmly.

I did this job a while back using (I think) Sellotape sticky pads - they are stickier than a sticky thing.

But whats the trick for getting the black ring bit in the right position on the back of the glass ? Maybe trial and error with blu-tack first ?

Take the ring out of the assembly, clean up the ring and glass, put the ring back in and latch it, attach sticky stuff to glass, adjust the mirror to it's middle position, stick the glass to the assembly roughly central in the housing.

Sounds just a bit like youve done this before ! I suppose you need some idea of where the plastic ring will end up so that the sticky stuff is in the right place on the glass but its got to be better than the alternative.
