I've removed the T5 box from my '96 Griffith 500, ready to replace it with a secondhand unit I bought several months ago. I don't know which TVR model the secondhand unit came from. I'm aware that if it was from a Tuscan then there is a chance the the 5th gear ratio will be different, but I expected it to be identical in all other respects.
If you want to play 'spot the difference' go straight to the picture below. Otherwise, when you look at the picture, you'll see the top covers are different (I don't meant the gearstick ball joint), and on one box there are some lugs on the side of the box, whereas they have been cut off of the other box which is the one out of my car.
My question is, do I need to cut the lugs off the replacement box, what TVR has it come from, and is it likely to be suitable for my car. Thanks!

why change it,would it not be better to have your own box rebiult
Possibly. My plan was to sell my old box if the replacement one is better, otherwise I'll get mine rebuilt later and then sell the replacement box. I was also concerned about the cost of a rebuild - it's not always easy to know when to stop replacing parts.steve-V8s said:
Top cover looks different in several ways, can you draw a line pointing to the bit you are worried about ? If it is just the top cover in doubt can you not swap them over ?
I've updated the picture in my original post to highlight the lugs. Also, on the top cover of the replacement box there is a small threaded vertical turret whereas the old cover has a horizontal thread in about the same area (which doesn't appear to be used for anything in my car).clive f said:
the top cover shouldn`t make any difference as I`m sure there is plenty of clearance between this and the underside of the transmission tunnel, if the lugs were cut off on your box, was it done for any obvious reason, clearance etc?
I'm happy to leave the cover as it is, as you say, there appears to be sufficient clearance. It is the lugs which concern me. As you suggested, the lugs probably need to be removed to allow sufficient clearance. They stick out a bit further than the reversing light switch which got quite close to the chassis as I removed the box.
I'll feel more comfortable about removing the lugs when someone says 'they are all like that'

Thanks.
http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/868724.htm This one seems to have the bits cut off as well. If you Google T5 there are loads of pics but the only ones I found with the cut off bits were yours and the one in the ad above.
I would suggest asking CTS (the gearboxman) he would probabaly know

Ditto to pink floyd my box is exactly the same as the top one in your picture it has all the lugs on the side and the threaded turret on the top. My car is a 1997 chim. Same chassis for both cars so should fit no problem. Maybe some previuos owner/garage cut them off for some obscure reason.
Thanks for all of your help.
It very much looks as though my replacement gearbox is from a later car, but...... on my replacement box the holes in the 'sawn off' gearlever are both the same diameter which is not large enough for the plastic sleeve, only the bolt. Even the photo of the '99 box from Jon (Chimjunkie) shows the larger diameter hole.
Could this mean that with some even later cars the sleeve was dispensed with and just the bolt is used? Or should I drill the gearlever to fit the plastic sleeve?
And one associated question - how easy is it to remove, in situ, the spigot bush from the flywheel?
Thanks.
