Not to hot when it comes to electric

High beam works with side lights on, and when flashing.... however it doesn't work with main beam.

had a rummage about abd checked connections to avail....

is this something the relay might do ?????

There's a diode lurking in the wiring loom near the fuseboard which can have this effect if it's failed. The other (more unlikely) option is the switch on the stick has failed. It's a fairly easy replacement in either case. The stick is easy to get - find a Cavilier in a breakers yard. However I don't remember the rating of the diode, so don't know if Maplin can help with that... I suspect they can.

If the relay has failed then there would be no light at all.

High beam shouldn't work with side lights only should it? I think its possible that might imply the diode is functioning but has been connected the wrong way round? IIRC that is the function of the diode to isolate side lights from main beam or flash. Do your side lights come on when flashing?? (sorry can't remember that circuit in detail off the top of my head its quite poss TVR used a couple of variants anyway?)

Doesn't the bible wiring diag show the pinouts on the stalks, so you could pull it and test the stalk in isolation with a mmeter?

I think Paul Gibbins? 'olemisery' sourced diode for similar age car and can shed some light Hoover. I have got a spare diode if you get stuck (dont be scared they just have blade connections at each end on early cars - so plug ' n ' play) ~ as usual finding it is another matter hehe.
