Has anyone looked at mapping just the ignition ? Im not looking for huge power outputs so the 14cux fueling is fine, but the ignition is pre historic. It also has been suggested that part of the shunting issues at low RPM with sportier cams can be attributed to ignition timing timing in addition to lean mixture, which a mappable system would at least part over come.

Mark Adams recommends Omex mapped ignition retaining the hotwire ECU for fuelling.

I'm sure there's a lot of sense to that, because the hotwire ECU is apparently very good at the fuelling, in the right hands (i.e. Mark's).

I can't help feeling that by the time you've got the sensors and wiring in place to do the ignition you're three quarters of the way to installing an ECU that would do the fuel too, and in my mind the benefits of a system that is openly accessible for fault diagnosis and tuning outweighs the functional benefits of the hotwire.

Fit megasquirt and only use it for ignition. Then if you want to go further in the future, you are all set.

I have been planning to do this for some time, I am sure that a well mapped 3D ignition system would make a large difference to the driveability of the Rv8 engined cars, the system I have parts for is from silicon chip magazine, it will also allow a knock sensor to be incorporated, I just need to get round to building the kit up. Initially I am planning on leaving the distributor in after modifying it to lock the advance bob weights. once I have it running ok if all goes well I will go to the next stage of going distributor less.
Some detail of kit here..http://siliconchip.com.au/cms/A_108521/article.html

There is an ignition-only system from Megasquirt. It´s called Megajolt.

Mapped ignition alone would be a huge leap in terms of performance and drivability, but why limit yourself in such a way? You'll have to do 90% of the work of going to a fully mapped ECU, so why not fit the extra 8 wires to go to the injectors?

You'll also save time and hassle when anything is changed and you only need one laptop to do any tuning.

That's a good point. (You need a few more wires than just the injectors, but the principle is sound.)

I think you would be better off purchasing the full megasquirt, even if you only use it for ignition.
Why? - if you plumb the map sensor, coolant and air temp sensors you essentially have all the components for a datalogging system and the capability to control your radiator fans and any other bits and bobs too.

I have had the Omex unit fitted and must say thta it made a huge improvement.
It didn't solve my MPG problem unfortunately, but it did smooth the low end revs to some degree......oh yes ....it also brought lots of loverly power much lower down the rev range. I went from having approx 105 lb torque at 2000 rpm to 299 lb torque. It also improved the top end power a fraction.

I would definitely recommend this upgrade.
