Takes the last notch on the handbrake lever to really hold the car so I think the cables have too much slack. So where is the adjuster located? All I can see is the pair of cables dissappearing into the transmission tunnel above the exhaust system.

At least you've got a handbrake that holds. Think your self lucky hehe The adjuster is near the middle of the rear of the car access from the offside rear wheel arch. It's a large nylon nut on the outer cable. Craig.

Offside rear wheel arch. It's two thumbwheels about 1" in diameter. If you look at the vertical chassis member where the diff mounts and follow it up you'll find it.

Bugger to get the handbrake equalised both sides, spent ages adjusting the wheels in and out,off side would hold, but near side would be slacker, and vice versa..... somehow managed to get it to be equal both sides, helps to have the footbrake applied when using the handbrake too,now 3 clicks and the car is solidly held......

still leave it in gear though....;)

Found what look like plastic nuts. Never seen a handrake adjuster like this one, just don't understand how it works. The adjuster looks as if it alters the length of the outer cable and there is no adjustment available to the inner one, so how does it work and equalise both sides. Is one nut a lock nut as mine are together and the forward one is up against the cable bracket. I cannot turn either of them by hand.

Seeing as the hadnbrake cable is a one piece unit it only needs one adjuster for tension.
As you say there is a lock nut, undo this and then turn the adjuster.

Yes ones a locknut, you might need a long screwdriver to work against the edge of the "nut" to slacken one off from the other, the threads might be gummed up with road crap splashed up,so wd40 or the like left to soak in for a bit will help loads...
