Rear end clonk
Discussion
The Griff has developed a fair clonking noise at the rear. I'll describe as best I can and see if anyone can help me identify:
1) It's regular with the wheels rotating i.e. one clonk per rotation speeding up as I speed up.
2) It appears to go away after I get over about 20 mph - but actually I think it's just masked by exhaust noise at that point.
3) it has a different sound depending upon whether I'm accelerating or coasting
4) It appears to be nearside but it's hard to tell
I got the car up on stands and ran it through the gears and the clonk wasn't there :-(
I'm guessing...driveshaft. I guess it's either that or diff.
Any ideas based on experience anyone?
Cheers,
Neil

Thanks Argent - I tend to agree.
If I do change one, is it worth changing the pair?
I've already got to pull the entire front suspension off to replace bushes and joints, I'm starting to resign myself to doing the same on the rear. However if I change driveshafts and it's the diff I'll be a bit miffed.
Can wear on the driveshafts be checked in any useful way?
Cheers,
N

Jack the back of the car up wheels of the floor,, Hold either side of the tyre 9 & 3 oclock and turn it about 3' one way and the same the other. If you can get some one to do this with you under the car (Car on axle stands of course) you will be able to see & hear were the noise is coming from..
My moneys on a drive shaft CV But im not a betting man.. Good luck GOLDIE

I once had a similar sound, but not from my TVR. I had a clonking sound that turned out some little sod had tried to steel my alloys but failed to undo the locking wheel nut. He got the other three off. There I am driving along with the wheel held on with 1 nut wondering what the funny sound was!!!!!
