I drove my pre-cat home on a 1.5hrs roadtrip after buying it and towards the end of the journey things got a little unpleasant in the cabin due to exhaust fumes.

Although there are no obvious audible signs of exhaust leakage (not that I've had a thorough check yet), there is obviously a problem that needs sorting pronto.

My question is whether there is a common cause be it gasket issues or cracked / corroded exhaust or manifold. just wandered if there is a good place to start looking.

If I had to go down the route of sourcing a replacement manifold all I seem to be able to find are replacement stainless steel items with quite a price tag. Does anyone know if you can still get steel pipes, if they are much cheaper and if so, from where?

Has anyone had a go themselves are replacing manifolds and is it as much as fiddly job as Steve Heaths book suggests?

Cheers

ps if anyone has a set knocking about that they are thinking of getting rid of ..... let me know

I'd look at the boot seal. I've heard of the exhaust fumes sucking into the boot from the rear and coming through the boot vents into the cabin.

can you smell the exhaust fumes when you open the window slightly? but not with the roof down, or the windows both closed?

if so you need to check the boot seal as the other guys have said, the fumes get sucked into the boot and then when you open the window vent out through the cabin, if you open the boot and rub your hand across the carpet in the boot lid I bet it smells of exhaust fumes.

I `ve tired a couple of different seals on the boot, but still don`t have a 100% seal, it must be to do with the shape of the back of the car and the aerodynamics.its been discussed on here quite a few times in the past, try searching and see what comes up.

I've found if the roof is up but the window slightly open this draws fumes in from the boot.

The main problem is the boot doesn't seal along its bottom edge and some aerodynamic oddity means that the fumes from the exhaust sit around this area.

At speed the airflow through the cabin with windows down seems to draw the air in from the boot and along the inner wing and into the cab.

I've considerably improved mine by fitting another edge seal to the return lip on the boot, this provides a rubber to rubber seal along that bottom edge and reduces the problem.

I suppose stuffing some sealing material/ rags into the holes along the inner wing might help as well now I come to think of it.

Good call all.

I popped the boot and found the seal was pretty frail and there were enough carbon deposits to match the output of the UK!

Fingers crossed this will sort it.

Cheers all.

It's right to check all the seals around the boot and tail lamps, but also worth whil going around all the manifold joints with a piece of small pipe to your ear, you will be able to hear any leaks.

Mine use to really smell badly, until I got it checked out and found some of the injectors were not performing properly.

Checking seals will help prevent you from smelling like a NASCAR driver when you get out, but it shouldnt really make the smell in the first place.

Cured! Down the scrap yard, vw golf hatchback boot seal fits like a glove! 3" trimmed off and I almost smell as fresh as when I got in! Just worked up a bit of a sweat not have power steering but I wouldn't have it any other way!

I'll spark another debate; 4.0, 4.3 or 5.0?
I've got 4.0 and had a 5.0 which I think had too much grunt for it's own good! 4.0 is slightly under powered (but still quick enoug for uk roads) but 4.3 must be perfect?

Well the 5.0ltr is quite a different car to the pre-cats, it got better heating / ventilation, power steering, better brakes they're generally a bit better 'sorted'

However I feel the pre-cat is more fun mainly because of this, the early 5.0's also had some crank troubles although this was resolved with the serpentine engines.

I generally prefer driving my 4.3 to a mates 5.0ltr but then thats just me, with mods you can make any Griff faster, rawer, more comfortable anything you want really
