4.3 litre ECU map - problem
Discussion
Hi
I need to re-map my ECU to suit a 4.3 litre pre-cat. Can anyone advise where I can buy a map from. I'm not going down the expensive re-mapping / tuning route. It's just that I am having my ECU put through a health check and it seems to have 'lost its map'. The company doing the diagnostics only have maps for 4.0 litres.
(Not an expert in these areas!) Any help available much welcomed
Thanks

Where have you taken the car?
TVR Power can supply an EPROM with a map on it. So can Mark Adams.
Losing the map without physically losing or damaging the chip would be a first.
Please consider the possibility that the garage has realised you don’t know much and are exploiting your ignorance.

Thanks... actually I sent the car to an ECU specialist in Plymouth area. Claims to have worked on the 14CUX ECU before, including on TVR's. The car would run with the ECU I sent to them, but it did have a very occassional intermittent fault. So I thought I would have the ECU checked over to eliminate any possible causes of failure.
Apparently it 'failed the test' and they have advised that some parts would be needed (circa £30) but they didn't have a 4.3 litre map.

Hi David,
indeed this sounds a bit odd. The chip in the Griff ECU came from TVR courtesy of Peninsula TVR. Peninsula could source a replacement chip (with map) but they'd get it from TVR Power at a guess, who 'have the maps'.
I think the ECU place need to offer a little more information regarding under what conditions the ECU failed (presumably) a bench test, what the components in question are, and what they think the problem with the map is.
Are they running it with the right tune resistor? If not they might be running the plain 3.9 cat map. I was told TVR only changed the map they needed to i.e. non-cat map for non-cat cars, cat map for cat cars.
PM if I can help with anything.
Ben.

Ben.
I've used those guys for 14Cux repair as well (my dads range rover) he mainly deals with cooking Landies so its entirely feasible he doesn't have a 4.3 map to burn onto the new chip.
I would trust them as they gave an excellent and reasonable service
Contact TVR power for a standard chip or Mark Adams if you want a better map. Bear in mind that Mark will want a lot more for one of his chips ( understandably)

Thanks all for the responses.
Yes, looks like the prom fails under test. Although to Ben's point, it's not total failure and I need to understand better the conditions its failing under. They do have spare proms, but not the map to put put on them (only a 4 litre map). The service and response of these guys has been very good and it looks like a genuine case (at least at this stage). I've advised them to make contact with TVR Power.... guess we'll have to see how that goes.

This post worries me- these ECU's are tough as old boots, and the most likely cause of Eprom failure is the chip was removed, and then plugged back in the wrong way around- instant death. The era of pre cat chipping information is a little vague to say the least, but I do have a modified 3.9 and 4.2 pre cat map if you want to to try them and see. Mind you if TVR power can still supply an origional, its got to be the best option, as your problem is you cant really tell what the fuelings doing without Lambda probes or a rolling road session. The "it feels quicker" test can be really bad news.
