odometer problem

Since returning from my holiday I have noticed that my odometer has wiped its self clean. When I turn on the ignition it has 0 miles and when I drive it this number increases until I turn off the ignition then it returns to 0 again. 
Mine is the speedo with a single digital odo at the bottom.
Mine is the speedo with a single digital odo at the bottom. The technology is old school and loses its memory if power supply is lost. So it has a permanent live feed from the car battery. A back up battery is fitted internally to the Speedo unit in case the car feed is lost. This internal battery lasts many years, but eventually goes flat. When that happens the odometer loses its memory and goes back to zero.
I suspect that the car momentarily loses the feed to the Speedo when starting. Can anyone confirm if this is normal?
Remove the dash and the Speedo. Check that there is a good supply and earth through the plug on the back of the Speedo.
Send the Speedo to these people.

Include a photocopy of your last MOT as proof of the mileage recently and tell them what the mileage was when it was lost. They will fit a new battery and reset the odometer to the correct reading.
Remember, if you don’t have the mileage restored before your next MOT, the test will record your mileage as zero. The DVLA computer will pick up on this and list a ‘mileage anomaly’ against your car. This will show up on an HPI check when you come to sell the car and it may put off buyers as it’s like the car having the mileage ‘clocked’.
