Suggestions to improve 500 sound
Discussion
After the Chatsworth meet last month I thought my Griff 500 was too quiet compared to many of the others that arrived.
I know there are threads to improve the exhaust sound of the 500Griff fitted with pre-cats but I want to know the views on the best sound not necessarily the loudest.
Mine is standard from the factory, it has that nice sophisticated V8 burble but I would like it to be a tad louder. What's the best method. What does the panel think?
I look forward to your suggestions
Steve

ACT non-reversal cone manifolds with no pre-cats, obviously.
V8 Enhancements Y piece.
Leave the rest of the exhaust standard.
Remember, the camshaft profile affects the sound too.
The above is quite muted on low revs and throttle, but too loud for trackday use when you open it up.
The icing on the cake is an Emerald ECU. These can have multiple maps in memory and a switch on the dash to swap maps on the fly.
Flick the switch, a few revs, shut the throttle.
Your very own 21 gun salute.

I cut open the silencer from the top and sleaved 2/5 of the perforated pipe... like you i didn't want to be too loude and this has given me the exact result... tad above standard on tickover and low rev's.. but push the gass and the sound is a lot better! I also removed the pre-cats and this for sure keeps the undfer bonnet temp down but does make it sound a bit more tiny... you could always wrap tape around if you didn't like this... but would suggest do one job ata time... 2/5's sleav on the perforated silencer pipes... top job....

fit the ACT sports cherry bomb exhaust, sounds nice without sounding to like a v8 tractor
Must admit that is the route I've been thinking about after hearing one. It's an expensive one though as all you really need is to change the silencer in the middle. Anyone know of the part needed or another way of achieving the same result?Edited by Englishman on Wednesday 13th May 19:28
Sleeving the silencer is a cheap way to start. It gives more volume and crackles on overrun. See how you get on with that - it can be intrusive to some people (drivers and neighbours!), then move up to the full cherries if you want. The sleeving cost me £140 and I haven't bothered to spend any more.
BTW don't forget that a lot of cars will be too noisy for tracks, most of which have 100dB limits.

Cut open the box and instead of replacing the baffle pipe with straight pipe, use a couple of small cherry bombs and then close the box up again. I did this to mine and it has now settled down very well. It has a nice deep burble on idle and is more than loud enough through the revs without being too loud.
Straight through pipes can be a bit loud and do not damp out the high frequencies.
Here is the link. Tried to add some sound files but not too successful.

I dont think anyone has mentioned it before, but I reckon the problem with the exhaust is that the diameter of the pipes is too small - after the silencer box
This is part of the reason why the sound is tinny.
I had a 400se before this and the pipework was easily twice the diameter of the Griffs giving a real deep rumble.
I've got no pre cats or main cat and straight thro silencers - its loud - but sounds nothing like a Rover V8

on the 400se,do the pipes come down as two separate pipes or are they two into one into two ?This is part of the reason why the sound is tinny.
