Another steering rack/gaiter question

I recently changed the gaiters on my manula rack as both sides were split. When I fitted the new ones I noticed that there doesn't seem to be a channel for air to flow from one side to the other. Hence as the steering is turned...One blows up and the other shrinks in a horribly distorted way.

This is right surely? Effectively the large "corrugations" on the gaitor don't seem able to do their job propoerly.

Has anyone else noticed this or had this problem?

For now I've left it but I'm not sure it's quite right.

You can address that by putting a short length of tube between the gaiter and the track rod, the sort of thing you get with a can of WD40.

The small tube is a good idea. Why would it be neccessary though? By that I mean, why would I need to do it now, how would it have worked when it left the factory?
