5th gear clunk???

When driving at around 2,000 revs (approx 50-6o mph )in 5th gear, I get a clunk from the drive shaft/gearbox when accererating or lifting off. Is this a normal TIV feature, an indication of a UJ on the way out or something else?

Think you've answered your own question.. I would go with the UJ wear & tear ,, sounds like one wheel spin to many will leave you stranded some were with no drive left..Hope its not to dear to fix...

If a UJ is going it will clunk at first but then start to make a metallic rattle as the bearings let go. Or at least that was what happened with the Landie, but then again its only got about 4hp!

I'd go with Del on this one as a finger in the air diagnosis. Its just the "in 5th" bit that puzzles me.

Will check out the top rear diff bush tomorrow. It was the 5th gear only bit that confused me also - hence why I thought it might be the gearbox.
