Purchased a cat Y piece from Flee bay last week. Took the car to work today cut the purchased cat on original seam & took 3 hours digging out the internal Catt .What a horrid job.. Thinking of taking off the exhaust manifolds off & removing precatts , Can anyone tell me if this is as hard as doing the Y piece , should i just leave it as now.. Car sound great now but still thinking could be better..

Combination of drills, big wood ones, when the middle is out it sort of colapses with aid of chisel
and hammer

Did mine off the car... thought about doing it on the car but glad I didn't.. mine were stuck in very tight... and the mess you make when drilling / hitting / removing the stuff.... remember... somewhere there is an exhaust valve or two open... you don't want it getting into your cylinders as it's quite abbrasive stuff....
Good tip also... if you take the manifolds off to do it.. re-fit them with 3/8" head bolts.. that way you can get to them all without removing things.....

Yellowgriff,

Done a similar thing with a Y-Piece as you, but went about it a slightly different way (windows style!!). Not too bothered about the cosmetics (obviously), as this side faces the engine. Also wanted the boss in ready for the wideband sensor in anticipation of ECU conversion.

I have removed the pre-cats from the headers, and am about to send them off to Zircotec for coating.

How do you find the noise with the main cat removed. I have a fear that it may sound a bit 'tinny' or 'tappety'?

I`ve took the precat`s out as described above and had the "Offord" conversion done on the system and that is loud enough! (loud enough for me anyhow!!)hehe

Whats wrong with just changing the whole exhaust system for a 'non' cat version and getting the ecu re-mapped?

or is that a daft question ?

I'm missing something here... I thought sleeving was removing the box and replacing it with a straight through pipe - nowhere to put wadding. More proof I'm stupid I know. rolleyes
Anyhoo, so what is sleeving then?

FWIW, I have the box with perforated pipes inside it with nothing else - no wadding. Still want it louder though.

PS. 10k last night, 8 now?!
eta. ah. With space and without.

"Sleeving" is were you remove the system from the car, open up the silencer box (top side so can`t be seen when on the car), remove the wadding around the perforated pipes, cut out the perforated pipes and replace with solid pipes, weld in to position, replace wadding around pipes (sounds a bit "tinny" without), weld silencer up and fit back on car. A nice deep V8 burble on tickover which turns into an incredible roar when you get up the revs on load. Your gonna have to shout but I reckon its worth the couple of hours or so to do it. Nice!
