Brake fluid leak

It appears that my brake fluid is leaking into the drivers footwell. Stained, damp carpets and a collection of fluid on the floor below the carpet.

Has anyone else ever experienced this ?

I thought it may have been clutch fluid but that's full to the brim and I've had to top the brake fluid a couple of times recently.

I suspect Master Cylinder will need replacing which looks like a pedal box out job.

Any hints. (main dealer job only ??)

The bible suggests that the reservoir can be overfilled and in hot conditions the fluid can expand and overflow. Also check that the cap hasn't been overtightened and split which can also let the fluid out. I'd also check that the pipes connecting the reservoir to the master cylinder are tight and in good condition.

That would be a failed seal in the brake master cylinder.

You should be aware that brake fluid is highly corrosive and flammable, and a good paint stripper, and also burns holes in any natural material that it comes into contact with. So if you get in on your hands you could leave finger print shaped holes on any natural fabric you touch. Get it on your shoes and that would be footprint shaped holes in the woollen carpet ...

I spoke with Ian the other day and he reckons this is probably the case but it's a bd job to put right.

I was just curious to see if anyone else had ever had a leak of fluid into the footwell. After speaking to various 'experts', I've not come across anybody who has experienced this before.

Very odd.
