Griff 500 cooling fans

Hello, all

Managed to extract one of the 2 cooling fans off my 500, as it has seized (!) and blew the 40 amp fuse. I see on t'internet that they are £140ish each.... (big body cooling fan)

Is this a TVR specific part, or was it fitted to any other car - I guess I am looking for a cheaper alternative

The same fan is fitted to some lamborghinis if that helps.......:-)

Joking aside, you can get them direct from Spal if you have any trade contacts - a pal of mine got one for his Griffith for about £70 from a German Spal agent.

I have had it to bits - water has been getting into the motor, and its shot (one pile of corroded internals)

unfortunately, looks like a replacement.....

Has the water been coming from the rain water passing down the bonnet?!?

I was watching my pride and joy in the rain last week and watched the water cascade down the bonnet and through the vent gap at the front only to reappear under the car. So I'm assuming the rusty front support member (the bit where the date stamp goes) and the corrosion on the base of the rad cores is as a result of rain......

Is there a mod to rectify this as cold rain water on the cores, motors and electrics cant be good for it or am I being a bit paranoid?!?

Some fans have been mounted upside down. The motor has a "drain" hole which should be facing down. If its the other way up the water stays in the motor area.
Well that's what mine was like!

I wouldnt worry about the water too much... mine lives outside (under a cover) and it seems OK ~ I did have a look at which way up the drain holes were on the motor, and it would appear that they were facing "up" and collecting water.... thanks, Dave ! My other fan appears to be the right way up, if that makes sense !

Apart from Lambo's, is there any other cheaper Italian car that this fan assembly went onto? - or has anyone subsituted this fan for another one ?

If you don't have a fan cowl then you could just pick an equivalent sized Kenlowe or Pacet fan from Demon Tweeks or Merlin or any number of other suppliers. You might need to make some brackets if you want to use the original mounting holes. If you do have a cowl then I'd guess further mods would be needed.

I've replaced my fans with a (much more powerful) pair off a KV6 Freelander and mounted them to an ali cowl I made which itself fits to the existing mounting holes in the rad. They're also fully sealed so no worries about water ingress. Unfortunately I don't have the original fans any more or you'd have been welcome to them.
