At the growl this year there was a SC 500 whose intake pipe dissappeared into the body just behind the passengers side head light. I didn't speak to the owner.. however assume there is a pod filter in the void behind the headlight. Access I imagine would be from the wheel arch.

Is this a realistic alternative routing rather than the twisted/heated inlet piping from the normal air filter at the front of the car? I am thinking of having a large diameter pipe to help assist in providing enough air. One downside is ofcourse making a large hole in the GRP body..

waveyhi Lindsay, I`ve done this myself on either side of the car for the twin air intakes on the ajpv8, I am using the cylinfrical air filters used on the pre cat griffs, they just sit nicely behind/ below the headlight pod.

less bends in the intake pipe and a much better source of air as well.

Probably not as good as Trackcars but this is my modified intake;

This has 2no. cone filters on the "F" branch and it goes into the inner wing (see position of the cover plate). I have enlarged the hole to the inner wing in the nose cone area and may in the future fit a small air scoop to help direct some more air in that direction, but at the moment its drawing enough air to feed the s/c on full boost. One advantage of this routing is that most of it is NOT in the hot engine bay
Certainly looks a nice idea thumbup

I have just had to do a similar thing on a customers car due to the radiator being moved up, the air flow is definetly a lot smoother

Ive done this before but i dont like the idea really .. the reason is the heater assembly draws air in from the inner wing .. I didnt like the idea of engine / fuel fumes and potential back-fires into the inner wing which get sucked directly into the passenger compartment by the heater fan. It could be that Im over-reacting but I wouldn't do it again on a customer car.

Hi joo the air filter itself is not in the inner wing it is aka the chim really and the filter sits in front of the rad

ah thats good then. Ive seen a few now in the inner wing and have done one car myself like that but the customer wanted it that way, not my preferred choice at all. In front of rad with smoother bends in the pipework will work really well I suspect smile

Going to try and do something similar over winter, as mine is a precat I don't believe the round airfilter above the rad will be helping.

Take on board about the filter in the inner wing though Joo, good point.

Realistically I can't see that siting the filter in the wing being as bad as having the carbon cannister at the other side? Most of us have fresh air vents or even extra blowers over the OS wing (pre-cats I guess don't have the CC though?).

With a splitter and the filter (+ a bit of shrouding) in front of the rad though I would have thought you would be able to create enough positive pressure to offset the extra bend from the undertray into the engine bay? The only drawback of that is that you will only see the pressure benefit at speed - not on the RR?

I like the look of this but being as on my precat teh hater fan is alrady say below the headlamp I suspect there won't be room. I suppose the thing to do is fit a 500 heater box ?

My thoughts too, but I suspect you may squeeze past the blower motor.

Will see when the headlamp comes out......

I've moved the filter on my 500 to under the headlamp too; just used the standard flexible pipe and a cylindrical K&N filter like the one above. There's a decent hole to the LHS in front of the radiator to let air in, and the filter is still protected from road muck and direct water spray.

I wanted a cooler intake location and to create more space around the cooling fans.

I haven't noticed any issues with smells getting into the cabin through the heater, and with the length of the pipe I struggle to see how it would to be honest. Far less than the exhaust fumes coming into the car when you're driving with the roof off anyway.... smile

Just spotted a thread about intakes, thought that's relevant to my motor, only to find that indeed it is my motor that is the photo exhibit ...

... and no, I hadn't seen it before, and no pink would not be my choice! .. and hopefully won't be featuring when I collect it on Saturday (complete with rebuilt engine).

Serious question Jools, are you really likely to get fumes belching out of an intake filter 4 feet from the plenum in a NA setup?

When I intially set mine up, I did get fumes and excessive engine bay heat in the passenger footwell which was due to a poor seal around the pipe going into the inner wing. this was remedied with a proper cover plate and gasket seal.

Hi Rob - if you've sorted my engine I don't mind what colour it is!

It does, however, look a little exposed, but I guess that might be the less than flattering angle!

I remember hearing that earlier cars had the air filter down low.

But if driven into standing water, the engine could get flooded.
