Another Speedo problem

I been seeing erratic readings on the speedo just recently with the reading fluctuating for no obvious reason.
I was out on Sunday and cruising through town at 30 I looked again a few seconds later and the speedo was reading 40 then 45 . Shortly afterwards it dropped back down to 30 again (the engine revs were the same throughout). It did this on several occasions and at different speeds but most of the time the reading was correct (with the usual 10% over reading that I'm used to). Coincedently when the speedo returned to the correct reading it appeared that the engine hesitated slightly but I'm not sure about that. Any idea if these could be related?
Not sure if any of the below is relevant but I've been having some other electrical gremlins recently so I'll list them anyway.
I've had a new speedo transducer fitted a few months back when the speedo stopped working altogether
Just recently the hot start problem reared it's head so I put in a new starter (it was reluctant to turn even when the solenoid did activate) and the hot start relay fix this weekend. It was on the test drive that I noticed the issue with the speedo. The hot start issue seems to be fixed but only time will tell pn that one
As I've been moving wires around near the fuse box I'll go and double check that I've not loosened something but any ideas what this could be related too?

Right, mine's erratic too & Caerbont Automotive (where they were originally made & who I think do repairs) is just up the road for me & I know someone who works there.....so... if we get a good few together I think theres a good chance we could get them re-con'd or calibrated for a good price.

The majority of erratic speedos are caused by the transducer/ wiring. A lot of speedo head units are reconned when they are fine because they are difficult to test. Speedo problem! so change the transducer. Still not working must be the head unit. Get it reconned. Get it back still not working. Problem was wiring/sensor spacing or something else.

Getting the rev counters converted to later internals, so that it is possible to drive them directly from ECU's would be very attractive to a lot of the non 14CUX people What do you think?
Panic, I had the same problem as you, speedo working ok but miles not ticking over on either the total counter, or the trip counter. Interestingly it stuck as it ticked over to 40 000 miles!
Then, yesterday I hit a bump in the road hard and then noticed the miles started ticking over again - go figure. So your problem could be as simple as something needing the application of a blow from a hammer.

I had problems with the odometer sticking last year & sent it off for repair, that was at 27500 miles, last week at exactly 30000 it stuck again, 400 miles later despite trying all the tricks it was still stuck. The problem is that the stepper motor that turns the odometer digits is not powerful enough to turn more than a couple of digits at a time, this is why they frequently stick at 30000 40000 etc.
I did not fancy the time & expense of sending it back for repair again, so took it out, wired it up to a pulse generator set to read 160 MPH (1.6kHZ) I then increased the supply voltage to 14.5, & sure enough this gave the stepper motor the extra grunt to shift all the digits past 30000.
I know that most here probably wont have the gear to do this, but thought it worth mentioning for those that do..

Panic, I have a front splitter fitted (forward of the original position) and I scrapped that on a bump in the road and that seemed to be enough to get the counter working again. I can't give you a specific place to give it a whack I'm afraid.
Actually, I'm a bit disappointed its working again, as now I'm ticking over the miles and using up my limited milage on my insurance policy!
