Hey Guy's, just something that I'm interested in.

What is the best standing quarter time known for a (standard) Griff 500
and what would you expect the car to do in unmodified form ?

I've been to Santa Pod a couple of times now (run what you brung day) yesterday I achieved my personal best so far
of 13.25 quarter mile time 103mph over the line with a 1.92 sec first 60ft time.

I was quite pleased with this, but what should the car do ??

The TVR owners manual says the car should do 12.2 sec quarter mile, can a standard car really do this ?
The same book also says the car has 340bhp and we all know how true that is.

Would be interested to hear from the experience of you other TVR guy's and any racers out there.
So if anyone has beat my time in a standard griff, please post, it should make an intersting topic.

12.2 is a good time for a moded car I would say, so your time is pretty good.
Moded cars have more difficulty getting away, but make it up in top end grunt.
Best I've done is 12.9 with a terminal of around 113(IIRC) on a frezing day with no grip...I'd say you did well.
There's been several days on here including one coming up next month.
check out the Gredge match thread in TVR events forum

cheers

I have done a couple of fast starts.. and apart from the traction issue one thing that interests me is gear change times.. and the effect on the 1/4 mile time. When I data-logged my ECU, I was surprised to see that the best times I could do when changing from 1st into 2nd was abt .7 second. This was measured from when my foot eased off the throttle.. to when it was back on..

I'm not into flat changing.. and love my gearbox so smoothness is important.. nevertheless such a long time seems to have an effect..maybe not so much so in 1/4 mile, but with 0-60 times there would be substancial benefit in changing gears quicker.. and smoothly.

Yep, weekend after next is the Gredge Match PH so put your name on the list and come along. The best I managed in the Griff with a modified 5 litre was 13.2 at 112. I've got a couple of running issues at the moment but hope to have it sorted for the 5-6 September.

See you there for a beer and a blast. smile

Would a 3.70 rear gears (that I have now after rebuilt and strengthen my diff) help much to improve both 0-60 and quartermile timings?

I suspect the gear change itself was quite a bit quicker. The best I've seen when data logging the TC system was 0.25 seconds from wheelspin to wheelspin. That was with an LT77 with good synchros. That was being brutal though, 0.5 seconds was more typical for a fast change,

For 0-60 if the engine was getting to far past peak bhp rpm then it would probably be worse (for a RV8 of course) as the gearing in 2nd would be too low...

As to 1/4 mile that would depend as to the cars bhp and at what gear/revs the car finished the 1/4 mile with the previous ratio - to calculate if a change would be beneficial.

I believe a 12.2 for a Griff 500 is possible but would need a genuine 320 bhp along with a fat torque curve. Also conditions would have to be very good along with a pair of sticky tyres such as R888s.

I ran a 12.2 over a year ago when i started playing with my Chim 450 and using 60 bhp of nitrous and the Toyo R888s.
Its took me quite a bit of work to get into the 11's but i now run road legal drag racing designed tyres (Mickey Thompsons) and over 150 bhp of nitrous.

Its all about everything coming together on the day IMO.

And that day will soon be upon us!

I'd be chuffed to get into the 12's. With a previous of 13.2 and 112 that would suggest to me a strong motor but me just being a bit rubbish getting off the line frown.

112 is a good terminal (about 300bhp in your motor?).
There is a mid 12 to be had with a good launch. What tyres do you run and what were your 60 foot times?

Morning Chaps
I have just booked into a RWYB in my Chim 500, got a couple of questions.
The rules say I need 'Arm Straps' What are these? And would I need these if I kept the roof up?
What would be an expected time and terminal speed, should I get of the line cleanly.
Realy looking forward to this as it is my first time.
Thanks

Where is the RWYB?
Arm restraints are usually only required if you want to run with the roof down and running faster than 11.99. These are race regs at York. They are simply straps you place your wrists in that are connected to the car or harness to prevent your arms from waving outside the cabin in the event of a rollover etc.
Usually a roll bar is also requirement in this case.
At shakey they want you to wear gloves in RWYB with the roof down but thats it as far as i know.

Chim 500... same as a Griff 500
A clean start and with a healthy engine should be into the 12's at over 110.

Thanks for the response, the event is at Thorney Island Hampshire. 12-13/08/09 All for a good cause.
Can I buy these straps and if so where from. Doesn't mention a roll cage in the R&R.
Thanks

Ooh that looks like a fun weekend, shame its a little too far from Cumbria.
Arm restraints can be bought from Demon Tweeks.
Otherwise just run with the roof up... quicker times anyway.
Let some air out of the rear tyres and just give them a small burnout to clean and warm them slightly and try not to wheelspin from the line.
Enjoy

I'll just be chuffed to reach the 1/4 mile marker without grenading my trannie cool...I'm going to be such a pussy off the line that I'll prbably be the slowest car on the day smile (just thought I'd get me excuses in nice'n'early ;0)

330BHP and 330 lb ft at the time

Tyres were T1R's which give the transmission an easier time than something real sticky.

There were no 60 foot times.

I would be suprised if anyone breaks a gearbox or diff etc.
Get a pair of R888s and you can give it a bit of wellie without wheelspinning.

I have a standard gearbox with a 500lb/ft John Eales clutch, standard driveshafts etc and have been giving my car plenty of stick all year with 400 bhp through supersoft 255's.
Its still in 1 piece (just).

After saying this, watch me blow it apart at Shakey.
Or lookout for a sad post after this weeks racing at York rolleyesgetmecoat

At the recent Fighting Torque event, I believe a couple of the Griff 500's ran just over 12.4s for the 1/4 mile and both of these are I think putting out 320bhp-330bhp, so a 12.2 might well be possible.

hi simon
missed you there this year!
my best on the day was 12.44, thats with 320 bhp & 330 lbs/ft, i had about 15 runs, don't think i could improve the time, short of removing wing mirrors and wipers and taping up some holes, but i wasn't up for that, although del did fold in his mirrors!! laugh
