Warranty Holdings - Gold
Discussion
I brought my car this time last year (1997 griff 500)and unknown to me the dealer had purchased the above warranty for the car, this maybe due to the fact that I negiotated that if anything went wrong with the car within the first 6 months they would have to fix it FOC. It is amazing what you can ask for on a rainy day in the between christmas and new year. Any way Warranty Holdings have rang me up to see if I want to renew the policy for the price of £799.00. Personally I feel this a little steep considering the car has only done 13K miles and I will probably only do another 4K this year. Has any one else had experiance of these warranties and are they worth the paper they are written on.
£799(retail) doesnt sound a bad price, to put it into context a policy on an Elise costs the dealer around £300 odd and an Esprit/Noble around £700. as regards to paying out there normally pretty good, only normal grey area is wear and tear and replacement of a wear and tear item as a result of a failure.
One small claim could recoup the outlay reading between the lines on the forums!

My only experience of this was bad.
I signed up to an extened warranty and 7 weeks later some stoned git in a micra wrote my car off!
Still it was only a car, it could have been worse. Especially if I had mounted the other pavement during the crash, it was a bus stop full of junior school kids. Bet they had some good stories to tell that day!
Not the sort of advice you wanted really I guess!
I reckon you should go for it though, or perhaps shop around for a different one first. I was offered cheaper if I signed up to an extened deal when buying a Griff. But the key point here is that the extened warranty was only cheaper if I bought it WHEN purchasing the Griff and not at warranty renewal.
I didnt buy the Griff and so cant comment further, sadly.

Yep! got a Gold warranty with the car when purchased from Fernies just over a year ago, had £1100 of warranty work done last year.
Renewed the policy this year for £299!!!!
Sounds like I might be needing it again soon, if the Lambda sensors are shot.
4ltr R Reg. Chim, 1750 on the clock!
So far very pleased. OH

I think, I will try an negotiate the price down, as I struggle to see why my policy should be £400 more than Big Al. Slighty more due to the milage, age and additional size of the capacity. My other issue is that I have had one of these warranties before and it is very easy for the company to put virtualy anything down to "wear and tear" as I previously experienced, and not pay out.

Agreed-- may be Al could use his Fernies connections and go into Business selling them for £350
No Fernies connection even they couldn't match the price direct from WH!
They phoned on my behalf to confirm if it was a gold policy, and checked labour costs etc.
Fernies in fact were more expensive!
Renewed my WH Total policy in mid Dec. For my Griff 1999 with 12,000 miles it was £650ish. Looks like Big Al drives a hard bargain. I'll give it a go next time - because I know of only one warranty supplier I didn't realise that the policy cost was negotiable! Are there other suppliers?
I had a wheel bearing and an alarm system replaced under warranty so cost/benefit was marginal.
Does the quote for the following year depend on your claims record for the preceding year? I only ask becuase I actaully had the alarm system changed twice because the garage incorrectly diagnosed the problem. It would be annoying if I am now paying for their error.

think Big Al. needs a career change neogiating(sp) warranty policy prices for one of the big PLC's!
Warranty Holdings underwrite Honda approved policies, judging by the premiums there charging us, think we must be subsudising TVR pemiums!

I bought my Griff 500 also a 97 at 3 years old with 9,000 miles on the clock it also came with one year warranty. I did have a few claims in the first year but nothing to bad so I declined the renewal. Within a few more months I needed a new power steering rack ( the old one could not be re-furbished) and a major engine rebuild.
Since then all has been well (in Griff 500 terms) I put my bad luck down to a low mileage car not being used and it taking a couple of years for the mechanical bits to settle down to being used regularly again.
My advice would be drive the car more and take the warranty for one more year, then decide.
Cheers,
Simon.
