Servicing without the service....
Discussion
On a less than amusing note, whilst doing the car's annual spring clean (see previous post) I had a quick gander under the front of the car's mouth above the numberplate, only to find under all the crud and crap, an air filter. (I'm still learning about the car so the mysteries of the air box is only just revealing itself).
Now, I bought the car with a load of paperwork and the understanding that the car has a FSH, maintained by a supposed TVR specialist, thankfully some distance away from me here. I'm not doubting the previous owner, nice guy and straight as a die. So, considering the amount of s
t I washed and scrapped out of the air filter then the experts have been cutting a few corners.
Replacing the air filter is usually a 30 second task on most cars, which obviously is not that simple on a TVR but it isn't rocket science, so if they couldn't be bothered to do that simple task, then could anyone suggest other 'simple' tasks these experts may have 'forgotten' to do?

you would be surprised, mine had previous history from a well known tvr place locally to me and they had reused/not replaced the cork sump gasket just loaded it with lashings of sillycoon, which soon bloked the oil feeders!!! i am now debating was else they didnt do for the 1700 quid bill!!!!
going to check the air filter tomorrow!!!!!!!!

I've experienced the same. The air filter can be a right PITA to change and it looks like so called TVR professionals / dealers are cutting corners!
My car was the same despite a full TVR service history before I got it. I had my last service done by a garage I trust. Mechanic said it took half an hour to change it (he knows how I am with my car and is ultra cautious with it) but said old filter was in a terrible state. My mate has a 500 too, took to same trusted mechanic who discovered his didn't even have an filter at all !!!
As always, I'm sure there are good and bad dealers as with any profession but don't always assume a Full TVR Service History means an A1 car. Mine & my mates cars are better now, even though they've not got a full TVR history and I'm sure some owners on these forums that do their own servicing could probably say the same!

There's got to be an easy mod to make changing it a much easier job...

Shudder

I feel dirty now.
Anyhow, on a slight twist on the subject, has anyone ditched the air induction setup on a 500 (Griff naturally) and gone for an upgrade, and did it make any real improvement?

Back on topic, I've always had my Griff 500 serviced by well known dealers and a few years ago I discovered the clutch fluid had not been checked and topped up for ages (I did it myself then put a dated sticker on the lid/reservoir - don't trust them any more) also when I fitted a K&N filter I'm convinced the old one hadn't been cleaned for ages, I only do 3k p/a in my Griff so I know it shouldn't have been that filthy
