Well tonight the Griff had its first trip on a low loader frown

A brief summery of what happened, i hope someone can help tell me whats happened and possible costs...

Travelling at around 30mph and all of a sudden lost all power and the car cut out.
Took a few goes of getting started again. Managed to pull away slowely in 1st gear then a big BANG.
Bang came from what seemed like the rear of the car.

Even thought the car was in gear it just revved, had no drive at all.
When i pressed the loud pedal the speedo still worked.
It was the same in every gear.

Help!!

Whats happened and how much am i likely to be paying?!

It only passed MOT last week, no faults at all.
Im gutted frown

You've probably snapped a half shaft. They're cheap and easy to replace. Worth replacing both sides while they're at it (otherwise you don't half feel a berk when the second goes a couple of months later) and of course new CV joints.

Have a look underneath - if it isn't spinning thats where your failure is (and you may even see a broken bit), about the only thing you can't see is if the clutch has gone?

A mate of mine broke one about 5 years ago, swapped it for a new one.. Job done... Why swap the other side and CV's if there's nothing wrong with them??
My own experience is that they tend to have a similar life. They fail through fatigue, and both half shafts see roughly the same shock loads. For the same reason I would replace the CV joints in pairs (because each pair works through the same angle and sees identical torque, when one is worn out the other is likely to be close behind.

Thats a good point and im certainly not made of money!

Hmmm, will see what my mechanic says when i can actually get it to him.

I just need reassurance that this latest set back isnt going to financially cripple me!

Typical, this happens just when we get our Indian summer.
Bollucks!

Think I'd question the 'easy to do' comment. They're not technically difficult that's for sure but it's a daunting and dirty job needing fair amounts of body English and decent kit. Certainly not half an hour with a jack and a multi-tool smile

As you have a 500 then I assume the speedo sensor is on the propshaft connection at the diff. As the speedo is working that means drive is getting to the diff. I guess either the diff is broken internally or a drive shaft has failed.

Drive shaft failure should be obvious if you can get the car on a ramp.

Hopefully you can get it fixed soon without too much damage to the wallet.

Do you have to remove the Hub ? Had my drive shafts off at the Diff end loads of times and rather thought they fixed on the hub in the same way with a flange and some cap head bolts. May be you can only withdraw the shaft after swinging the upright down. As said, if cost is a consideration you can get a complete shaft with UJs from the breakers.

As the Speedo was working and the Speedo sensor is on the driver side diff output flange that rather suggests it is the driver side shaft that has failed.

Speedo still works even if you are in neutral?

Don’t understand that comment, other than I suppose it works by showing 0Mph

The OP said the speedo kept working but he didn’t move so if it is a 500 the driver’s side diff output must be going round… I think.

If you want to replace the outer CV you have to remove the hub..

If its just a shaft swap then no

Sorry, I missed the middle out of his account of events hehe ie speedo reading as he coasted down redfaceops:

OP: you may be lucky and shaft is OK, just all the bolts have come out / sheared off (but don't bank on it!).

If OP's Griff 500 has a GKN diff (as does mine) then the speedo sensor is on the propshaft to diff flange, wouldn't that mean that it could be either side driveshaft, or the diff, that is kaput?

Assuming it's shafts, IIRC there are uprated drive shafts available, but I forget where from.

Anyone remember details of where from?

Assuming the car is tuned, or may be during the life of the new shafts, you may as well fit the stronger ones now.
