A worthwhile Exhaust mod?

Just found out that one of the guys that work in my company is an ex TVR technician. he tells me that they used to strip the centre silencer box and sleeve the pipes, making them straight through. He went on to say that it was worth about 5bhp and gave the pre cats a fantastic pop and crackle on the overrun.

Who out there has done this and was it worth it?

Worthwhile. It does make it a bit louder, not sure on the BHP claim though. If your exhaust is good do it, if it's near the end of its life not worth it, put the dosh towards a replacement.

Did a 50% sleeve on my car.... not toooo loud!... just nice..... and pre-cat's out.... got 280 at Growl this year!!

removing the pre cats and sleeving the silencer will make it a little louder, but the engine will breath so much better, and will feel more responsive, especially with no pre cats.

Definitely - sounds great. Of course, when you want to do a track day you then have to spend more money on bolt-on silencers in order to meet the noise regulations. Daft really, but worth it for the day-to-day soundtrack.

Question: does removing the pre-cats stop the banging on the over-run?

Pops and bangs are surely one of the best bits about the sound? It certainly doesn't remove them, as both of these mods allow more unburnt fuel to get through and ignite in the hot exhaust, which is what those noises are.

Reasons to remove the pre cats

1 Increase in hp around 3 to 4

2 Reduces under bonnet temperature significantly

3 better sounding exhaust note

And in any case they are not necessary to pass an MOT so why the hell keep them

Personally I don't like the sound of a car thats had the full cats-out/sleeved work done.

FFG's sounds quite harsh and no disrespect to Paul but it would drive me up the wall listening to the engine note of his car.

Each to their own though - lets face it, we don't all like Classical Music or Heavy Metal either - so I'd recommend you listen to/drive in a few before doing it.

But I didn't take the cats out as it never had any?
It is loud but I don;t think harsh. I've got some single exit (each side) pipes to try.

Went to Chatsworth and my Griff 500 was one of the quietest TVR's there. Got home and fitted a sleeved exhaust but kept the pre-cats. It now has a great burble, like boiling oil (not the engine), and a banshee howl on accelatation. It is not too loud but makes heads turn. Best thing I've done so far.

Some people don't like the sound of a sleeved/straight-through exhaust car at idle. This is fine as there can be no nay-sayers when same car is at full-tilt. In a tunnel. At midnight

I would have to agree with Baretti. I'm not a big fan of the Cats out and full sleeved option, I think it's even worse when you remove the wadding as well.

Loud? Yes. But possibly a bit agricultural for my tastes, especially on idle.

But this is personal preference.

As said above, have a listen to some cars. Also each car soudns different. Nick450 had pretty much the same exhaust setup as me (Before his SC) and our cars were (and still are) very different.
