Engine Oil Temperature Gauge

Has anybody fitted an oil temp gauge in a Griff? I was considering putting one in place of the clock.

I guess the main issue would be getting a gauge to match. Could you use a second water temp gauge? I seem to remember reading that somebody had made their water gauge switchable between water and oil.

Not in a Griff, but in a Chimp. I just opened up another aperture in the dash (now like a swiss cheese, what with that and AFR gauge, map switch and starter button). If you want matching clock faces, the Cerbera guys did a group buy on oil temp instruments from the oem supplier. Might be worth a search for details. I initially tapped the sump bung for the sender but it is better in one of the galleries off the oil pump/filter block where there are some bungs that can be used.

just fitted one in mine, the Cerb forum boys had a group buy from Speedcables a few months back, and I`ve fitted it in place of the clock.

I installed a VDO gauge in the hole where the clock used to be. I used a VDO dipstick replacement temperature sender, it's a direct replacement for your dipstick and worked perfectly for many years.

Can you still 'dip' with it?

How do you know the level marks are the same, or do you put your own on ?

An alternative route is to add another water temp sensor (into an oil cooler line for example) and then use a siwtch to flick between the 2 signals on teh water temp gauge.

I've done this a couple of times - works a treat and saves adding a gauge

It's a neat solution that would be fine in most conditions but oil *can* run hotter than the scale allows on most water gauges 'though, I guess, by the time you're off the scale, it's time to back off anyway...

Good shout, but I haven't got an oil cooler and only want this as an aid to making sure she's warm before I engage the after burners

As I have late dials the match is exact and I could add this in to the existing set up without losing the clock if I wanted . . . just need to make sure it all looks OK. No voltmeter on mine so I could slide in another dial without causing it to look to cluttered.
