Found this 'cut' in the right side diff/drive shaft gaitor.
Anyone know how this would have happened, and how to fix it? I was looking for the cause of a hig-speed vibration. Could this be a factor?

Hiya, have you removed the bolt on the joint to the diff?, as it,s missing in the pic, may be a start of your vibe hunt, replacing the shaft may be a good idea, cheers Tom. Depending on the mileage, if you are taking one shaft off, you might as well do all 4 c/v's.
I like the fit and forget principle!
For the cost off about £225 + VAT + boots for GKN parts, it's got to be worth it.
When I renewed mine last week, I thread locked and torqued the flange bolts up as with all the power going through them, it seemed they could easily loosen, your's may have proved that point

Best you add a few more £££ & upgrade the shafts as well then I like the fit and forget principle!

Who was it ? Hi Ian,
It's difficult to say what caused your split boot, but looking at the picture I would say that that its been done for a while, usually it starts as a smaller puncture then spreads out like shown in your picture. Anyway, as soon as the grease is lost your Cv will wear out fairly rapidly. The usual scenario is the tracks in the Cv wear causing a 'rattling' noise rather than vibration, which is usually heared during take up (rather than high speed).
When you strip the shaft down you will see the extent of the damage and i'm sure you will not want to put it back on the car, with just a new boot and grease.
I'm into this subject as i'm the Manager of the Driveshaft Warranty centre at GKN Driveline in Birmingham.
I also happen to be the owner of a Griff 500.
Anyone with any TVR, with a driveshaft problem, I can probably help you as GKN Minworth supplied TVR with driveshafts at Bristol Ave right up until closure.
So if you decide on a new shaft, or just want driveshaft advice, just get in touch with me on here.
Regards
Steve
