Battery Placement

Has anyone tried moving the battery from the footwell to between the rear parcel shelf and boot,thinking of cutting a hole in the rear bulkhead so that the battery is partly in the boot and partly on the rear parcel shelf between the air vents,and boxing it in and finishing to suit, the bulkhead is quite fat so should not be too intrusive on parcel shelf,could then tidy up wiring and fuse box to footwell and gain a little leg room. Any thoughts please?

Only that the fuel tank fits fairly tightly to the rear bulkhead, so you have much less space than you think you have.

The best option I have seen so far is what CliveF & Pete500 have done - locating the battery in the boot. It makes fitting the roof in a tight fit, but it can be done.

Locating the battery close to the fuel tank and the ever present petrol fumes may have serious consequences should the battery develop an internal fault.

I am personally aware of an incident where a battery had been left on a float charger and hydrogen gas had accumulated above the plates (I know it should escape through the valve and breather tube...if fitted).

When the charger was disconnected and an attempt to start car was made, there was evidently a short between two of the plates, resulting in an internal spark and a violent explosion that blew the battery case to pieces.

The battery was in this case located in the car boot and its destruction caused a horrid mess, with smelly battery acid covering everything.

...just a thought!

Not sure about that, it's a fibreglass panel about 5mm thick. The tank sits about 20mm behind it. So you'll have an inch inside the boot and the rest (about 7") on the parcel shelf. Wouldn't locate it there myself.

Someone relocated the fusebox behind the passenger seat,and put the battery in the boot.There was a thread on the Chimp forum with pictures and a write up.Might be worth a look its quite good ,thinking of doing the same myself.
