I've seen lots of threads on here about an engine "noise" which is apparant on my Griff 500 (serp), but has anyone drawn a conclusion and actually had it fixed??

The noise is a "clack-clack-clack" on the over run between 1500 to 1200rpm (especailly when engine warm)

I know there are other people with the same problem, but appararantly no solutions!

The trade seem to point to the lack of a thrust retaining plate fitted on the serpentine engines camshaft. Merely relying on the chain tension to control axial thrust. This is allowing the cam to move forward and one cam lobe "rubbing" against an adjacent lifter.

It has been suggested that i could fit a teflon thrust button on the nose of the camshaft to help, but has anyone any experience of this?

There must be somebody out there who can help, and i know at least three of us would buy that man a pint for his help!

Many thanks.

This is exactly the noise produced by worn hydraulic tappets and or cam. More pronounced when warm as the oil is much thinner. Have you had the state of your cam and tappet assemblies checked?

Cheers,

Thanks for your reply Pete,

I haven't, but "macdeb" had had new lifters fitted for a different noise, after which the "clack-clack" noise started. He replaced all the rockers and push rods and refitted the recently new lifters. He said no cam damage was apparant. The noise disappeared, but has now returned!

V8D reckon the cam is "walking", RPI agree that it is possible and both JE and Real Steel produce a tefon "button" to prevent cam movement.

Are they barking up the wrong tree do you think?

Thanks,
Christian.

If V8D reckon it's cam walk, then it's much more likely that they're right than I am!

FYI...depending on the year, as far as i am aware...most serp engines have a cam retaining plate already fitted. teflon buttons are not too good with the serp front cover

Come on guys, there must be somebody who knows the answer to this question!

"IPAddis","macdeb" and myself all have the same engine noise problem, it can't have been unheard of before surely?!
