Hi all, ive just tried to start my griff after a 6 week layup, due to work, and despite the better half switching accumate on for a day each week, alledgedly ;-) , battery is well flat as soon as key is turned.....it was fine before.... so i think maybe it has failed completely this time........anyway..my question....what is a good replacement battery for the griff for mainly road use....i want a good capacity and good cranking.......also should i leave the accumate connected permanently ? i just thought that i was helping the environment by not leaving it switched on all the time....what do y,all think ?

Just gone through a very similar experience.

I've found that a new battery will only last 10 to 14 days without a charge before going completely flat. There seems to be quite a high current draw from the alarm system.

I then bought an accumate and it took 4 days to recharge the battery!!! I checked this and it was within the parameters for charging time. So, by only putting your accumate on a day per week, it won't be enough. Leave it on permanently when you are not using the car.

You might have bought one by now but Steve Heath's book says the battery is normally an 072 type / 630 Amp cranking capacity. I recently bought one in Halfords (072), maintenance free, that was 550 Amps and is fine, although expencive at +£90. I'm sure the one I previously bought was around £70. Some people go for thinner/smaller racing batteries that help with passenger leg room, but I think they can suffer form a short life as they're not designed for daily use and I believe their cranking capacities are smaller ?!? Of the normal batteries, make sure they will fir ok into the battery box.

Fairly sure trickle chargers, like accumate, are designed to be on permanently to keep the battery topped up, only replacing energy lost to the alarm, clock etc. They might be able to, but I don't think they are designed to charge a battery from flat. If you are worried about the environment there are solar powered versions available.

An accumate is designed to recharge a battery from flat and to also maintain the correct level of charge.

Why don't you buy a timer socket?!! Mine goes on for two hours every night - works a treat.

Why not just leave the accumate connected all the time - that's what they are designed for and the power they use must be tiny.

it's really a monitor top up device...

Power usage is tiny (have smart elect meter thing)

I'm on only my second battery in ELEVEN years.

Wrong car to help the enviroment mate!! Accumate has my total support trickle charges when flat as its suppossed to and keeps topped up for next to no cost - I just plug mine in and forget it

Thats because its repairing the battery (ie reconditioning it) rather than just recharging.

Accumates = Conditioners, plug in and forget.
Work fine on Gel batteries too.
Had mine for years.

I've happily had a Varta type 96 (reverse) for quite a few years now. It fits snugly in the floor mounted battery box and is 650CCA. I also have one the same on the LR.

Thanks for the replies guys,

I was just going to go with the standard varta 072/E24 at 630CCA, but if the 096 at 650CCA fits in the box......then why not.

How much difference will the extra 20CCA make to the batterys turning power and stamina ?

can i also just ask...does the 096 definately fit in the standard griffith batt box, and do the batt cables connect ok with the terminals being reversed ?

I ask because i am not at home to measure my box, and have to order one blind, so to speak.

cheers
