My Rover 'boxed 4.3 has a very slow oil leak from the front of the gearbox bellhousing. The oil collects on the lefthand of the two bolts which screw in vertically, and which also fixes the exhaust 'mount' in that area. I say the leak is slow, because the drip collects (very slowly) even when the car isn't used.
I don't think the leak can be from the crankshaft end seal, because the bellhousing doesn't seem to contain oil - the clutch doesn't slip, and the hole through the bellhousing under the clutch slave cylinder is clean. Similarly I don't think it's dripping down from the valley gasket, and it certainly isn't a rocker cover gasket. The drip appears even though I haven't started the car for 3 months.
To be honest I can't tell if it's engine oil or gearbox oil, although I suspect it's engine oil as the drip appears very close to the engine/bellhousing join.
Could it be this gasket?
If it is, surely the crankshaft end seal must also be leaking?
Any ideas as to what gasket/seal might need replacing?

Cheers...

What colour is it? Red is usually Gearbox oil. Black/oil coloured is engine and to be honest sounds like a crankshaft seal starting to go.

Well, it's reddish, but then the engine oil's pretty fresh (a few 100 miles use) and looks similar - given that I'm looking at a drip, and not a jar full!

If it was the crankshaft seal, would that not drip out the bell housing as well as the bellhousing/engine join?

Having had a seal go.... it can drip for some time and only when it gets worse does it drip out of the bell housing. The oil gets disposed off by air flow etc. If your car has the bell housing with the inspection hatch, it is possible to look/feel with everything in situ.

If it is a drip I would keep an eye on it and top up as necessary. Start saving some pennies in the meantime.

No inspection hatch, just a small (10mm?) hole under the slave cylinder.

Thanks for your help.
