which radiator
Discussion
I`ve popped the radiator out this afternoon, and am sending it off to be recored, there is nothing wrong with it no leaks ect, but griff rad is only 3 core whereas the cerb is a 4 core apparently, and I need to get the running temps down a bit, so I have a couple of options open to me,
1. have an extra core, making a 4 core version
2 still keeping the 3 core, but having the bigger cores fitted.
so my thoughts are that the 4 should be more efficient than the larger core 3 version, has anyone on here fitted one of these, and what improvements have you found.
just a note, an alloy rad is not an option, far to expensive to consider.

I had no issues with mine with 3 cores as long as the rest of the system is up to par . . . However it sprung a leak in the summer so I had it re-cored and it was upgraded to 4 core. Found it excellent in the heat of the South of France in the summer and have had no issues at all.
Mines not putting out the power yours is, but it's also not std and although the 3 core didn't give me any headaches I'd go with the 4 core.
As for gunking up, I've never had any issues with it as I flush mine every year and use good quality coolant which I'm sure you'd do to . .
Spend, don't you use some exotic, expensive type coolant. I'm intrigued by this given the AL block etc . .

I had made an ally rad made (Brise Fabrications) for my TR6 3.9 V8 with a 17" fan, this worked fine even in France for Le Man, that hot year about 2005? lol....The Griff has been recored according to the previous owner and if I get any probs will deffo go for an ally replacement. apparantly the ally works so much better at dissipating the heat and according to Tim @ Brise to increase the cores can have an adverse effect as the air flow is restricted

Yup VW/Audi synth anti-freeze & the insides of my waterways seem a lot nicer than others I've compared with Spend, don't you use some exotic, expensive type coolant. I'm intrigued by this given the AL block etc . .
I just went with the designed for prolonged life in ally engines & figured its got to be better than the generic stuff.. Over 5 years now and it's pretty much exceeded my expectations TBH.Don't forget the cores are brazed in & that itself can intrude - smaller you go the more chance.. Much easier to stick a litre down a 100cm2 pipe than 4 25cm2 pipes Clive

When are the temp's getting extreme Clive? Slow moving and idle? Mine gets a little warmer than I'd like under these conditions. I have an uprated rad' which is fine at normal road speeds. I just figure that it needs more of a helping hand from the fans when there's not enough forward speed to force air through it. I understand that some have fitted the fan motors from the Cerb' which spin faster. Maybe you have these from when you bought the AJP? It's something I'm considering investigating.
That's a good point Bruce as I think I probably have the Cerb fans in mine, which probably makes a difference over a normal 500, but I'd need to compare fans to be sure . . .
As an example, with the ECU controlled 2 stage fans in this weather sitting in traffic I get away with only one fan coming on and off, it needs to get considerably warmer before the 2nd fan is required.

interesting thought Bruce, I`ve been told that the fans are the same but the cerb has a 4 core rad as standard whereas the griff only 3. not saying that its gospel though
it was getting quite hot stuck in the London traffic on the TiTT4 run, so playing safe on the assumption that come the summer things will be much worse.

O.k, I've just spent half an hour talking to a chap called Roy at Serk Services about this. I'm given to understand that uprating a radiator by the addition of capiliaries can lead to overcrowding of the unit. There can become a point at which the o.e fans are unable to keep up and drawing cooling air through the restricted airspace becomes problematic.
The Griffy Spal fan (VA10 AP9 47A) doesn't appear in Serks catalogue. VA = 12" shroud and type, AP9 = Motor, 47 = something or other, A = Suction type. I dunno what the flow rate of this is and neither did Roy. However, there were two fans suggested as an upgrade on account of the motors being larger (deeper) I've not counted the blade number:

- VA10 AP10/C61A which can flow 1750 Cubic Metres per Hour
- VA10 AP50 C61A which can flow over 2200 CM hr (which was recommended).

just an update, got my radiator back from M & M fern radiators in wimborne, new large bore 3 core fitted, with the whole thing given a nice re spray, £140 +vat.
a good business to deal with, and has a lot of experience with TVR`s.
it turned out that my old already had a large bore 3 core fitted, but at some point in its life had been badly repaired partially blocking some of the cores.
