Simple Brake Upgrade?
Discussion
I've already posted this in the "S" Forum because its for my V8S (1992)but I was wondering if any of you Griff boys might know the answer. I’ve got a pair of Griff discs and a pair of Granada Cosworth callipers. Bolting them all onto the hub it looks like the centre line is lass than 1mm off. (and yes, the wheel will still go on). Will the floating carrier compensate? The standard pistons have a diameter of 54mm and the Granada ones are 60mm in diameter. The standard discs are 240mm and the Griff ones are 260mm. I think the Granada discs are larger. On the standard set up (Sierra claipers & discs) the outer edge of the disc runs very close to the top of the caliper. On my Granada/Griff combo, there is a larger gap between the outer edge of the disc and the caliper (see photos). Does this mean the Griff disc is too small to work with the Granada caliper? Also will the brake balance be affected? Any other considerations? Thanks in advance for replies.

Of all your concerns, the only one I would be worried about is the large gap getween the edge of the rotor and the caliper because it means the pressure point of the piston may be in an odd place.
If you can get those photos it might help.
I'll grab a picture of mine today, albeit with the EBC rotors I posted a link to about a week ago.

Just cut and pasted this from an earlier post - do a search for 'brake upgrade' for the whole thing.

Are the early discs 240mm dia? If so one of the more popular swaps withing the fast Ford community is to get hold of either Scorpio 24V or Sierra Cosworth 4x4 front calipers and brackets and use these with a rwd 283mm Sierra Cossie disc. The carriers will need a slight amount of work to open them out as the standard Scorpio/4x4 cossie disc is I seem to remember a 278mm dia disc, so obviously the 283mm rwd Cossie disc wont fit without a small amount of work. The other thing you might need to do is to space the carrier off the hub fractionaly to centre the disc in the carrier. A large dia washer usually does the trick.
I found this mod out from an Escort or Fiesta forum I think it was, and used it on my Cobra Kit Car (which used std Sierra hubs) to upgrade from 240mm to 283mm front discs. The difference was very noticable to say the least. I got a set of secondhand calipers and reconditioned all the rubber seals and got new pistons for them, at a fraction of the cost of a big brake upgrade.
I would have gone for Cossie 4 pot calipers but couldnt fit them behind the Halibrand alloys due to the offset.
Hope this helps
